It's time to introduce the heifer in the picture to a bull. She is a 15 month old 1/8 brahma, 7/8 hereford cross. I have available my neighbors Charbray bull. He is a proven low birthweight producer, and I have several of his calves with AngusX Mommas. They are good performing commercial stock. My questions are: Should I do this mix? Or am I better off AIing with a Angus type? What color can I expect and will it be saleable without taking a hit.

There may be some strong opinions on this, but I do know I'll get some good info from you knowledgeable folks :)
I appreciate your input. Even the sometimes colorful confrontations are interesting

I would stay with the angus AI thought. woundnt do the charbray thing he is not what that heifer needs. by the way good looking heifer. almost forgot it would be black :D

My opinion:

You would be better off to AI to a heavy quartered Angus Bull.

Color: Black - Polled - possibly a little brockled face.

If you use a Charbray Bull, you probably will lose some dark color - and you will take a hit at the market.

You sure on the mix of this heifer? She has pretty good ear and leather for 1/8 Brahma.

Almost looks like it could have a much higher percentage brahman than Hereford, hu.

Flaboy: That's what the paperwork that came with her said.

I too have been concerned about the color with the grey charbray. I have also considered Red Angus. She does stand out in the pasture, being the only red one amongst all the black.

She is the best natured easily handling of the lot

after looking at the heifer i really dont think a charbray would work on her.im leaning towards the angus on her.scott

Good looking heifer although I wouldn't have guessed her to have that much Hereford, she looks a little more than 1/8 Brahman. I'm not knocking Charbray-don't know much about them but I would probably lean toward a low birthweight Angus for her first calf. I would be a little concerned about the birthweight of the Charbray. With a black bull you should get a black calf, could possibly have some white on the face.

I have seen & have a few that show more bra that had less & vise versa. got a couple simbrah that look like they have more simm. influance than brahman and they are F1s

if the charbray throws calves like the char side the calves will be fawn or tan, here the sell good. if he is gray they maybe black mottley or gray. if you know he is low birth weught and throws good calve it may be a good cross.
i have a gray cow and a braford bull (5/8 x 3/8) the 1st calf black mottley second a light red white face.

Springer: I always enjoy seeing your fervor for the breed you love!

Thanks everyone for your input. Since the remainder of the herd resembles the picture below: I think I'd like to go with Angus, but Red Angus, for a change. Do any of you Angus folks have a recommendation for a suitable AI available Red Angus Bull?

Black does sell good, though those reds sure look pretty in the pasture. Although the goal is really to see "green" in the pasture (dollar green, that is).

Depends on what you're4 looking for and the make up of your cows. Do you need udder improvement, more milk, more or less size, calving ease, larger rib eye, more marbeling, higher weaning/yearling weights, retaingin any heifers?

There is a gentleman on this board named "Ollie" that has a Red Angus AI bull that will do what you need/want.

Dun: Since she is the only unit I have of this genetic make up, and she has not yet produced a calf, I don't know how to respond to the excellent issues you raised. I do know that I will seriously look at retaining any heifer calves she produces.
Read that as "keep the best, sell the rest".

My thanks to MikeC. I'll PM Ollie and seek his recommendations about using one of his RA bulls.
