OK, last year I posted about getting two weanling Hereford heifers (not purebred but nice),,,,and guess what ,,,they grew up just fine (I did not kill them) and we had a guy bring over a Hereford Bull this summer and I think they are bred (well I have a stronge suspicion). Neat huh? They are big girls now and will be mommies in the spring!!

Somehow since then I got a Charlois bug and today put some money down on a very well bred Charlois weanling heifer.
That will make a huge herd of three heifers? Not impressive by Cattle Today Forum standards,,,but since I never thought I would have even one,,,three to me is a herd!!!

OK, the guy who breeds the Charlois came over and told me my Hereford heifers were rolly polly fat. I have been feeding them a little dry cob once per week and will cut that out,,,they are in a nice four acre grass pasture, I give them a little grass hay every day? Do I have to put a muzzle on them? Any advice? Should I cut out the extra hay as well?

If the cobcorn is just a few cobs to keep them running to you I wouldn't be too concerned, its better to go into your winter with a little too much condition rather than not enough. The extra nutritional needs of the growing foetus will soon take care of the roly poly fat.

Post a few pics of them and I'll be better able to tell whether they are fat to the point of being problematic.

Herefords should be able to get fat on just pasture and hay (that made them popular in the first place) so if yours can do that, you're well on your way to success. I doubt the charolais will get equally fat without grain.

sounds to me like you have 2 nice hereford heifers.if they have plenty of grass id prolly cut back on their feed.they can stay in good shape on grass.

I agree with others..cut back their feed if they are getting too fat..but...photos would be great. Lots of knowledgeable folks on here can give you a better gauge on if they are really at that point of fat.
