After being up most of the early morning hours with a Migraine I've been thinking of different options for fly control.

I'm thinking when I unload my new heifers this afternoon and while they're in the corral I'll just spray them with my new pressure sprayer that I bought to spray my fence line. I haven't used it for anything so it's clean. Anyway, I thought I'd walk among them and spray away. How concerned do I need to be about it getting into their eyes? I was thinking of spraying with it set between stream/mist as to get the power of stream and coverage of mist combined.

I hope you have really strong fencing. They won;t know you and for some reason the spray mist deal seems to get them kind of edgy. I walk among ours all the time but when I start misting them they move away fast. That's why I suggested the pur on for the first treatment

That will work but the pour on will give you about a month of (mostly) flyless time
If you dribble just a bit just forward of the poll it will also help with face flies

Spraying is 90% of my fly program. I get the cows into the 10x60 lane leading to the sweep tub in groups of 6 or so. They'll walk past me and I'll mist them with fly spray. After that they'll walk past me again and I'll spray the other side. Whole process takes about 7 hours for 80 animals.

What about their eyes? How do you avoid getting into their eyes?

Not to hijack the thread but what is the name or type of pour on you use for flies and how safe is it for cows bred in early June?

Thanks,
Alan

I don't worry about getting it in their eyes. Try to avoid spraying too much in the eyes but don't freak out if a little gets on them.

We use Ultraboss in the fall and the cows are 5-6 months bred. We've used it a couple of times this year when the cows have been short bred. No problems with any of them

I spray mine also. Dump a few cubes out a walk amongst them with a pump up sprayer. As mentioned try to avoid the eyes but it won't hurt them. As mentioned try to get them on the poll and let the fluid kinda dribble down their nose to help with face flys. The older cows don't mind and all of them kinda get used to it as the summer progresses. With very little rain this time of year a good spraying will last 3-4 weeks. I use a Permectrin product. Any time I have some in the trailer, they get a good spraying.

Is this the 14 you were going to buy and resell?
Why not worm them and try to help them out a little that way. Most pour on wormers help with flies some. Might help you put a little weight on the calves too.

Don't think you'll get near enough of the insecticide on the animals running it thru a pressure washer. You'd get a much better coverage and concentration to mix it the strength you want and use a pump up hand sprayer. Being new cattle just about anything you do immediately is going to strir them up.

I wanted to try this product this time because it seems to fit almost perfect as far as weight and what I bought. I sprayed them while they were still on the trailer and they didn't mind too much. I'll post some pics soon.

Of course I put too much in the sprayer. Can I just leave it in there until I use next time? I sprayed it until all the pressure was relieved.
