So what animal hobbies other than cattle do some of you guys do?

We raise and breed Show quality poultry up here in MN on the side.. Just for fun and show... We participate in a lot of bigger shows here in Minnesota and are party of the American Poultry Association.. We focus on Large fowl Buff Orpingtons and BBS Sumatras but have recently got back into Black Cochins and added Bantam White Rocks..

We tried rabbits (singular rather) this year as a jump into 4H for my son. We thought we'd get one and then next year start 4H. Had the thing 4~ months now and it's starting to go downhill. Isn't eating, isn't pooping, needs to be spayed, oh it's fun. My wife thinks (this is her deal) that her back teeth are too sharp and she doesn't want to eat so it goes into an "exotic" pet vet today b/c most vets won't touch rabbits. And of course, the vet is in Boise so my wife is headed there during rush hour today. I think this will be the last rabbit I ever own.

cheaper for it to mysteriously die or end in in a pot of rice

What's your secret? The last one here that died, was 10 years old. Only three more to wait out.

It died this afternoon. I had to pick up some meat at the butcher's, and as I pull into the house my wife met me at the door to tell me that she had died a couple of minutes before I got home. Saved me $200 to find out it was going to die.

Luck? I don't know. We did everything you're supposed to do. It's my understanding that they're kind of fickle beasts, but I don't know much about them. I guess they're weak b/c they have about 1,000 a year to compensate.

When I was growing up, my parents were renowned horse trainers. We stood 3 stallions and ran a band of nearly 50 mares. The horse market crashed in the early 2000's, and we sold all but the very favorite ones. Now, horses are back to hobby status for us.

We also spend quite a bit of time hunting, bass fishing, and restoring old Farmall tractors!

Very nice goats and horses BootJack. I “inherited” some goats. Seems like there’s constantly something wrong with a few of them. I’m pretty dang good as a “cow vet”. But these friggin goats are a different story. I try to do everything right but once they get puny I have a hard time getting them well. And it seems to happen very quickly. I ain’t quite got them figured out. But it looks like you do! Very healthy looking.

I did the chicken thing (Wyandottes) for several years but this summer did me in. Sold all of my best birds to a lady in Oklahoma.

Where did you get your Wyandottes from? Did you ever show any?

BootJack I really like those goats... Very nice. I don’t know jack about horses but they look awful nice as well!

Oh the joys of rabbits... Always wanted them but when I got the opportunity I turned it down lol. Too easy to kill.

Started out with Foley, then added Lefeber and Gardhouse lines, then went back to Foley. I have never shown anything myself as I was always happy with raising and selling. Plenty of people did and did well, or so I'm told. Some of these crazy chicken people would show your birds and claim they were the breeder, but I had a few customers that would snitch them off.

You guys have some good looking chickens.

Thanks Jo. In my case it would be had.

How come you decided to sell them?

Found out I had pulmonary fibrosis about three years ago, which is not a major problem yet, but the heat this year made really hard to care for them like I should. Just decided I needed to cut back on some projects and they ended up on the list.
