Is this cross always black

Usually would be black, but on rare occasions could be red. Both parents would have to carry a recessive red gene and both would have to pass it on.

on occasions you can get calves that are marked like a holstein, not sure on the specfics but it seems the color dominance gets scrambled. Generally they will be all black, perhaps a little more chrome underneath than your average angus.

Some are solid black..... some have the white markings but its on the legs and underbelly (or that is how ours are).

so far holstein x red poll is a solid black calf, but the holstein/angus cross cows will throw a red calf out of the red poll which surprised me so I'm thinking the cows must have a red gene as well in order to throw all red calves??
