Angus vs Red Angus vs Hereford

Absolutely no way could I distinguish between the three British breeds and two of them share a common ancestry. Now if you put a typical Angus, a typical Lonhorn, and a typical Belgian Blue I probably could identify which steak came from which carass based on ribeye size.

i think i could. If anyone wants to try me please send three steaks labeled 1, 2 and 3. I will promptly email the results.

Ohio,
Re:
So are you guys telling me that you could have three steaks side by side by side and tell which breed they came from with 100% certainty??
No, absolutely not. But I can only speak for myself.
What I am telling you is that buyers and consumers are willing to pay a premium for high quality beef and that there is a demand for high quality beef.
And that the black color hide is only an indication that the animals with a black hide may be of high quality, as most black cattle are Black Angus or Black Baldies who are well know for their high quality of beef.

IMO all the hide color does is increase or decrease the chances of the quality of beef being high quality or lower quality, which can only be determined at slaughter.

But if you would like to ship me 3 rib eye or sirloins, breeds of your choice, I would be more then willing to take your little test.
Just mark them A B and C and I will let you know which one I liked the best.

Shorty,
Re:
When the hide is off they all look the same
Might I suggest you do a little research on “USDA” inspection and “ultra sounding” of live cattle?

Slaughtered both Angus and Hereford yesterday and without the carcass tags a guy couldn't tell them apart.
All fed the same and the carcasses had a nice covering of yellow fat so they should taste the same.
Now most folks can tell the difference between a grass finished beef and a grain finished animal with just one little bite.

Is there any cash in Herefords or is it all in angus?

Not that I have extensive in raising cattle, but I'll share my opinion anyways. I don't really think it's an issue of breeds as more of an issue of having business sense. One person could take a herd of cattle of whatever breeding and bloodlines and potentially make money, and another person could take the same set and lose their shirt - and that goes for anything.

If you're looking to make money in the cattle business, develope a business plan, get it critiqued, tackle the marketing issues if need be and go from there. If you want to build a brand around a breed, then so be it, but I think so many people lose sight on the real goal and get caught up in the little details...

That's just my 2 cents though.

This assumption, due to the tremendous marketing ability of the angus association, has caused many to go the black route. There seems to be less and less effort being placed on the genetics of producing a quality carcass, and more emphasis on producing black hair. This in time will cause, what was at one time some of the best beef on the market, to look else where for good quality beef to include in there marketing program. Or maybe it has already happened. ;-)

Well said. I'd pay more than 2 cents for that

I do believe you on the business plan being set solid. I am looking to make money in the cattle business. I am also looking to do ET from high price embryos as well into recipients. I have to find the diamonds in the rough and exploit that.

Long ago Herefords used to bring more than Angus/black cattle. Just depends on who you are selling to and what they want. Check out your local market and go to the livestock sale barns and just see what colors get bid on the best.
