I was wondering if its possible to locate the sire of a calf if you know the sire's tattoo # and not its registration #. If so, is there a link to a database you can use for this? Thanks.

If it's an Angus, I don't think so. There's no requirement in the Angus Assn to include info on the sire in the calf's tattoo.

In the Char Association "Animal Search" function, there is a box for typing in the registration number, and a box for typing in the animal name. Either of these boxes may be used.

Because the animal name usually contains it's tattoo number, just type in for instance, "P36" and the database will select every animal with that number in it's name.

Then you click at the bottom of the page on "Progeny" and every offspring of that bull will appear.

You might have to sift through several, but you can find it if the animal was registered or data was turned in for it.

Same for Simmental.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I have the tattoo numbers of the sires but haven't been able to cross check this in anyway yet. Calves have three different tattoos, one is their number, two is a health stamp and three is sire's tattoo but the calves are not registered. Just wanting to start a little experiment and the more data I can collect the better.
