Which Angus A.I. sires would you recommend for use on Brahman heifers? The goal is to get a healthy calf on the ground without any calving difficulties. After that its all a bonus.

There are many calving ease Angus bull available for AI. Who's going to be doing the AI work? You might ask the AI tech for recommendations. I'd look into Ironwood New Level or LCC New Standard from ABS. Both are proven calving ease bulls and both did very well in the Angus Sire Alliance program. We've used New Level some and have been satisfied with the calving ease. Bothof those bulls have good carcass qualities, too. New Level is older and has data on over 5,000 calves reported into the Angus database. They both go back to B/R New Design 036, one of my all time favorite bulls.

New Level reg #13320150
New Standard reg #1418253

Look up pedigrees here:

We do have been doing our own A.I. for the past 9 years on a small herd of a different breed.
We are looking in a Bovine-Elite catalogue for sires and don't see either of those you mentioned.
The 2 we see with low BW EPD's are : Sydgen Mandate 6079 and Woodhill Mainline.
Any experience with these 2?

Plus One on the LCC New Standard Bull. I have a son of his that is throwing 65 to 75lb calves. The largest so far is out of a 1700lb Angus cow and it barely made 80lbs.

The bonus with New Standard is lots of WW and YW

Thanks for the links. Yes, I found both sires and their data. Really appreciate your help.

No experience, sorry. We use ABS or GENEX bulls mostly. In my opinion, Mandate's EPD accuracies are still to low to use him on heifers, though his pedigree looks to be a calving ease one. And Mainline goes back to a bull that is supposed to be a carrier of the Fawn Calf genetic defect, Bando 598. Until they get the test worked out, I wouldn't recommend any bull that I know has him in their pedigree. In looking at the Bovine-Elite list, I see they have Northern Improvement. He was a hot heifer bull with the show bunch several years ago. The calves will probably carry more frame than the two I suggested, if that matters.

The neat sorting feature that was posted allows you to sort by birthweight. Just watch the accuracy of their EPDs. Don't use anything with less than .85 accuracy in BW. .90 is even better. :)

Ya'll are loaded with great info. One more question. What is the AMF-NHF notation?

Those are two Angus genetic defects. I'll post links rather than try to spell them out. You won't get an affected calf unless you breed an AM/NH carriet to an AM/NH carrier. But you will produce more carriers. Please don't use Angus bulls that carry that defect. The "F" means an animal is tested free of the defect. If it says AMC, it means the animal is a carrier of the defect.

Sydgen Mandate will be fine on heifers, I recently purchased a performance pedigree on him.

He has had 127 calves in 7 herds ratio 97 for BW, ratio 102 for WW, and 72 calves ratio 102 for YW.

Calving Ease score on 127 calves is 1.0.

If your looking in sire directories all the bulls should be AM/NH free. Theres more than just looking at BW depending on what you want, with frame size and other things. Take a look at Accelerated Geenetics Net Present Value BW -1.8 acc .92 but not a large frame around 5.5 so pick out your first most important trait which sounds like BW then move down the line to what is next most important and so on. If your going to keep hiefiers look at maternal traits. Theres lots of good bulls out there.

Thanks for all of the answers and avice. We have decided on using LCC New Standard on our full-blood Brahman heifers.

Good choice. One thing you will find is they have very good dispositions. Be sure and let us know how they turn out.
