Alcohol

If alcohol was banned, what would your reaction be??? I would probably plant a bit of hops.... .[/

My reaction would be........nothing. No change in my life.

Nothing better on a hot day than some cold mead or blueberry wine so I suspect I'd get a few bee hives and some more blueberry bushes. Of course to concrete a buzz down there's nothing better than Blueberry Medley. (organically made of course)

Unless you are talking about becoming a bootlegger.
Not quite bootlegging, I was thinking more along the lines of a little 'homebrew' -but when one considers bootlegging it may well be more lucrative than the cattle buss ;-) .
What worries me about these homebrews is the headache factor, Jo and ALA, how do you prevent that? Is it the sulphur content or what?

Chris and Isomade, you don't necessarily have to partake in the drinking bit but just consider the consequences to mention but a few - child abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence, drunk driving, civil liberties of law-abiding citizens, drinks industry (world economy).

The impact will be far reaching....and will have an influence on everyone.

Not much bother here.

However, organized crime would now flourish on another avenue besides pot, coke etc. A larger budget would be needed for law enforcement. A whole lot of common folks would now become criminals - lose the right to vote etc. More folks going jail. New rehab centers.

They tried this before.

If it was outlawed what would you rub on the cow when you get ready to give them a shot?

Alisonb, I don't drink like I used to and rarely do I overdo it. Ok, maybe once a year. But when I do this I will not drink sweet drinks or mixed drinks. Wines, mixed drinks anything with a lot so sugar in it will leave me begging for the firing squad the next morning. The second wine off blueberry wine cooked slow and pure is drinkable in its pure form over ice and leaves little to no hangover. I used to understand the chemistry of the hangover but I've forgotten but it mostly has to do with impurities so the closer you get to pure the better. Less acid aldehydes or something like that.

BTW - the filtering process has a lot to do with impurities too. Bacardi rum made in Peurto Rico will give you a heck of a hangover but if you have Bahemian made Bacardi it leaves you in much better shape.

Back in my drinking days I solved the hangover problem by only soering up once a month or so

Well, since about ninety percent of what I do drink is made at home already, I guess I'd have to just quit hanging out with my buddy, the deputy.
Alisonb, I can put it away with the best of them and I can honestly say that I've never had a hangover from anything that I've brewed myself. It's the sulfites and preservatives in commercial brew that makes you hate life... As long as I don't just flat over-do it on alcohol, I wake up feeling like I got a vitamin shot.

Old Dean Martin quote, "I feel sorry for people that don;t drink. When they get up in morning that's the as good as they're going to feel all day"

Allison, I'm curious why you ask the question? Is there a prohibition movement bubbling in your area?
The USA will never try alcohol prohibition again. Prohibition caused more problems than it solved.

Yes sirree!! :lol2: :lol2: A couple of bloody marys took care of many a hangover back in the day.

On a more serious note, anyone that reads this thread and thinks they couldn't survive without booze probably needs to take a closer look at what's important in their life. Just saying.

Prohibition didn't work, I would be surprised if any nation tried it again. But if they did ban liquor I would be PO'd. I don't drink often, just a few times a year, but when I want my nip of bourbon, I want it. Not to mention I would have to find new recipes for pot roast and all the other beef dishes using red wine. Perish the thought, Alison!

Prohibition MADE organized crime in this country. Built the mafia and I believe gave the Kennedy's their seed money(rum running) in the end it did far more evil than good.

Having said that if it were not available tomorrow I would buy blk market and still have my whiskey, and also my homemade wine. I also NEVER have hangovers cuz as Jo says I drink nothing sugary. Straight Canadian Whiskey, Sour Mash, and home made wine.

for the record since we have acquired Polish inlaws I have learned to loath Vodka. Makes me sick every time. I cured them of making me drink it with them. I told them we had to have one shot of Grappa for every 2 shots of Vodka.
