Once you get the hang of it and until your arthritis gets too bad in your hand it's really pretty easy.
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Depends on the situation and what you're trying to accomplish.
The bull studs that sell semen claim AI is cheaper, people that don;t do AI and sell bulls claim a bull is cheaper. Herd management is sure a lot easier without having to deal with a bull.
You need a storage device or facility for the semen until you use it. A package of sheaths, some paper towels, an inseminating gun, a clipper to snip the end of the straw, tweezers to remove the straw from the goblet/cane/canister, sleeves, a thermometer and a thawing container (not required with some thawing methods), a way to restrain the cow/heifer.

Out here I have a guy that lives about 12 miles away that come out and AI for me for $40 a head my first year I did 2 cows all OK got 2 heifers, the seconded year only got 1 the other we think aborted she never came in heat for 9 month? Third time we will see this June. So now this year I will have 3 cows 2 heifers and I’m thinking about getting a bull, if you are not there when they come in to heat forget it.

Nice post. AI is actually an AWESOME tool if used properly. I can use National Champion bulls on my cows without ever seeing the bull in person(personally do not advise doing this, but other do). Depending on your cow herd you may need a clean up bull.

M.Sarria, I would say a 9 month old calf does not need breed. Usually breed mine at 12 months so they will calve as 2 yr olds.
 
ilfarmer92,The "9 month" the cow that AI in her 9 month of Pregnancy she never had a heat and there were know calf that’s what I meant to say.
