I am thinking about learning to AI and I have a question for all of you who AI. In general how many straws or attempts does it take you to settle a cow.

I use one straw unless she's one that I really want an AI calf out of. Then the bull gets his chance. Some people only use Ai and breed till they are all stuck, sometimes 2-3 straws.

First of, I congratulate you on wanting to train to ai, I trained a few years ago. Notice I used "trained" vs "learned", as I feel I am still learning new things, techniques, ect. You will train, but remember to keep learning after the class too. As for your ?, that's a very broad question with many possible variables, it may only take 1 straw if all goes right. Less experienced ai techs may not have as good of results at first. As for a exact answer, it does vary to be truthful, but a vast range anywhere from 75-30% first breeding conception rates are realistic from what I've read/heard. On our cattle, I ai 1-2 times if necessary, then turn bulls out for clean-up. On my parents dairy farm, they are 100% AI, and some may be bred 3-4 times if needed. I breed for them some, and I feel our beef breeds are easier to settle then their holstein/jerseys, prob. due to more stress ect. with dairy production.

Jenna's right, if your not concerned about a tight calving season you could go through as many as it takes to get them stuck. It just depends on your circumstances, breed, and what your plans are.
