I've been considering some AI-ing and I know nothing about it. What are the steps in this process? What is the accuracey? How long before you can tell if there is conception? How many straws are used?

A good tech should run anywhere from the mid 80's to well over 90 % first service conception. If they don;t come back into heat they're probably bred, but you can palpate (have someone that knows what they're doing) at 45 days or so. 1 straw per service.
It's easy as pie to do.
You reach in through the rectum, manipulate the cervix through the walls of the colon, pass the pipette of semen through the vagina and cervix to just inside of the uterus and deposit the semen.

How far in do you stick it into the cervixs. Just slighlty comes to mind. I have AI'd pigs once apon a time. They would latch onto the tube. Do you slowly release the semen. Thanks

First you must have the facilities or access to facilities. The best way to learn is observation, and hands on. You can try to coordinate this through a local ranch, vets office, or dairy. You can also try calling the local Ag extension agent. Some breeds require than an official AI tech do the breeding in order to register the calf in that particular breed. The best way to learn yourself would be to take a certification course which includes hands on practice, and gives more than just your imagination as to the cows anatomy. Accuracy depends largely on ability and the timing of the cows heat.

I think most ranches consider 60% accuracy to be average if everything is done correctly. You will see 80% or better in some operations. Some breeders will AI the cow multiple times (2 or 3) in the time frame she is ready to conceive to increase the chances of conception. Some may only use one straw. Usually a cow will cycle every 18 to 21 days, so if you AI and she comes back into heat in three weeks (perhaps sooner if you have her cycle wrong) then she is probably not bred. Ultrasounding (sonogram)is a newer method which can "usually" determine as early as 30 days or even less. Otherwise Palping the animal as early as 45 to 60 days will tell you if she is bred.

All the way through the cervix into the uterus. But just into the uterus.
And yes, you still slowly deposit the semen. Squirting them out like through a hose would damage/kill or at least severly screw up a lot of the little guys.

Rod,
Dun and 1848 has u on the right track.

Go to this site for a detailed study...as a student I think this is the best description on procedure out there.

http://www.selectsires.com/index.html click on reproductive solutions..left side .. AI rainging Materials...then AI techniques(mispelled).

Caution.....they are referring to the left hand in...uh...hummm..para 8 I believe...a little unclear in writing.
