Any recommendations for bull semen on my heifers (thinking about AI next year). Looking for herefords that will work o.k. in a hot central texas climate. I've been surfing the web. I've noticed some outstanding EPD's. But I'm wondering if I need something that is from around here or will a bull with good epd's in canada work out in my situation?

Walt - not to rag on you - but to ask that question out of the blue - without knowing your animals, your plans, your operation, no pics, no history and in fact, nothing - shows me you need to "search" a whole bunch of things.

I sort of equate your question to being like me asking you -

"Does the colour of my eyes clash with my shirt?"

How can you truly answer? You have not seen me or what I am wearing.

Anyone can come up with some answers for you - but in truth if they do respond with the minimal info you have provided - I am not so sure I would take that advice.

Rethink and provide us with more and you might get a decent answer or two.

Best regards

Thanks for the reply Bez. This is one of those situations where I know, I don't know, how to ask a question. I'm not even sure I want to AI yet. As far as operation. I have 5 cows and 5 calves. I'll end up with 5 cows and 5 heifers next spring with 5 calves on the ground if I'm lucky. They are mixed with mostly red brangus in them. Only one is registered red brangus. I'm looking for something that will calve easy and give me good replacement heifers. I'm not worried much about WW or YW at this point. A medium frame is what I'm looking for. If I'm still out in left field let me know. I realize that my itty bitty operation is a joke to some of ya'll but I have plans not to mention a family to take care of. I'm trying to grow this herd the best way possible so I'm not kicking myself 30 years from now. Besides If I wasn't on here I would have to play barbie with my daughters or talk to my wife :D .

Why not ask those who run hereford bulls in Texas, Caustic Burno, Txag, and Campground Cattle would be excellent candidates for sound advice.

I belief Caustic runs some brangus cows as well.

Don't overthink this, use a bull that is proven to work there whose semen is affordable, EPDs compared across breeds will be nonsensical, if you need to strengthen certain traits, by allmeans keep that in mind.

One bull that springs to mind in Vindicator, well proven, moderate, easy calving and semen costs $10 per straw from Reed Enterprizes. If you bred registered herefords, I wouldn't neccsarily recommend him, but for commercial use I am sure he'll do well for you.
