You folks down south and across the Southwest will know this plant. This is my first experience with it as my wife transplanted it from her grandmothers place about 10 years ago. Her grandmother had it planted under a window in her home because no one in their right mind would have tried to climb into it and risk the puncturing of the needle sharp points this plant has.
It gets the name Century Plant because it can be decades before it spikes and blooms, and then only when conditions are perfect. The bloom is not pretty and the plant will die afterwards. When dead, smaller plants should emerge from around the mother plant.
We had our yard landscaped a few years back and this was in the back by another building. the Mexican workers started cussing when they were told they would need to move it to the front where it is now. Later the owner told me that they were saying that they thought when they moved from Mexico they would never have to deal with one of the $%*#@%* plants again.

4-28-12 and the spike measures 7'5" above the tallest leaf.
