A while back someone penciled out how much revenue would be produced taxing luxury boats. The consumers took their money elsewhere and resulted in a tax deficit.

Now people in Chicago are contemplating buying large ticket items from lower taxed areas.

10.25% Sales tax in Chicago

The tax is estimated to bring in more than $440 million in new revenue.

I'm a little weird, but it interests me to see what leaks across state borders. Cigarettes are #1 around here. Ky is right across the river, and their tobacco tax is lower. Nobody comes to this part of Indiana without going over to Ky for some discount smokes.
Alcohol flows the other way, because Ky has dry counties. But, on Sunday the wet counties in Ky can sell beer by local option so there is a flow of customers into Ky on Sunday. Indiana has no Sunday package sales.
Up north, the Indiana cigarette tax is lower than Illinois, so there are folks coming to Gary for cheaper cigs. I'd need a lot better reason to risk going to Gary.
Casino traffic is INTO Indiana. Three quarters of the license plates at the casino will be from Ky and Ohio.
Many years ago, Ky had phosphate detergent and Indiana had banned phosphate. My aunt would always go to Ky and buy detergent.

What do you folks go "next door" to buy?

They're going to tax their way into prosperity..........

They are just as stupid in our nearby "city" as they are in Chicago. Small town of 15,000 population increasing the budget by 3 MILLION dollars this year. I can understand the fuel cost being adjusted, but the idiot politicians are: (I'll just shut up now. You don't want to get me started) :devil2: :dunce:

In Northern ND we have a lot of Canadains coming here . They spend alot of money , the only problem is that with the proper paperwork they get the sales tax they paid here back!

Everyone here goes to Canada when they turn 18. We have to be 21 to go to a bar they only have to be 18.

We have men traveling to Alabama from Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, and Tennessee to take our women 'cause they're so much prettier here than in the aforementioned states. Of course, it goes without saying that we have plenty of Yankee men migrating into the state 'cause everyone knows Alabama has a corner on the market for gorgeous girls. But being the good Southern girls that they are, the Yankee men go home emptyhanded.

We aren't really next door to anyone. But we did used to get cigs when we were in Oklahoma from the Indians. Cheaper by far. People in Oklahoma buy beer in Texas cause Okie beer is 3.2, but you can buy beer everywhere in Oklahoma and Texas has Sunday laws and dry counties.

Does Oklahoma still have 3.2 beer?
