Those of you who have read my posts for the last few months know how adamant my philosophy is concerning BALANCING EPD's. I have had several reactions - both Positive and Negative and serious and jocular - regarding the use of EPD's in breeding programs, but for the modern day breeder of Beef Cattle to be optimally successful in his/her BUSINESS, the judicious and scrupulous use of EPD's (Expected Progeny Differences) is essential. 8)

Having stated the above, I have decided to 'bite the bullet', so to speak, and publish this web site here to encourage ALL of you to peruse it and read the information contained therein. The important factor in this particular treatise resides in the fact that it is ACROSS-BREED EPD's - which is the KEY which can unlock profits for cross-breeding programs.

There are sixteen breeds represented in these adjustment factors and they are all up-to-date for 2005! It is an easily-understood table and I urge you all to click on the web-site and have fun! I am not seeking to have an argument or a controversy over this. I am just an old AG Teacher that can't get 'out of harness', I guess.

Every year I hope they'll come out with carcass data and every year I'm disappointed.
Red Angus and several other breed orgs, don;t know which ones, are working on standardizing their EPDs.

That is EXACTLY what should be done. But just like everything else, politics and 'one-upsmanship' rears it's ugly head and nothing PRACTICAL gets accomplished. Maybe we as a board should appeal to MARC and send a petition with xxx numbers of names requesting some pragmatic and sensible approach to standardizing EPD's and carcass data for improvement of beef breeding. After all, they are the same species, even though different breeds WITHIN the same nomenclature. And all the blathering excuses they can come up with won't mean a hill of ------ when it is all said and done. Just DO IT!
