Absolutely ridiculous!

I could actually see how this plan may work.
It would force a lot of producers to go out of business while the market adjusts. The fewer cattle we have, the less poop. Eventually there would be less meat and milk on the market, and again there would be less people poop. Of course the less poop the less methane.
What the politicians really need to look at is all the poop they are producing with bills like this. I believe their's will out weigh anything produced by cattle.

Ok so if I shut down because of this where will my cows go? No one is going to buy all my cows pay the “tax” on my cows and there’s. It’s inhumane to kill them. Will the government step in and take them? I could just pull all my tags and let them run wild.

I think the stat that they need to pay a tax on all the deer in the state if I have to pay for my cows. I know it would take a lot deer to make 100 tons of gas. Some time I can count more deer in my hay field then I have cows in my pastures.

If this all comes down to global warming what about the “big freeze” that happened in 1977 according to Times Magazine in December (I think it was 1977). Yes it’s true that the northern ice caps were melting while the southern ice caps were growing. But it was a few months back that CNN said that the northern ice caps were growing again.
If the new tax is based off of global warming then we need to rebut because the changing of the weather is based off the wobble of the earth; wonder why the North Star changes ever few years.

Now if this tax is based off “global dimming” then I can understand.

With any luck (bad) algore will be named the head of the EPA

dun..be careful what you say. Al Gore invested this here internet and probably is reading every word you write. :lol2:

I think the US Government has much bigger fish to fry than a tax on cattle as polluters! There seems to be a lot of pollution going on in DC and Wall Street these days. This sounds like a diversion tactic.

How much bad debt did we all just take off the back of poor ole Citicorp??? And that was just today. How many criminals were pardoned TODAY???

I'm not about to start saving pennies for any cattle gas tax.

I sometimes think we would have been better off if he would have just quit when he invented electricty.

I guess its up to me to save the world. Here is my solution. Ok, so a cow produces 165 lbs of methane per year. Most people run a cow per every two acres of land. This equates to 82.5 lbs of methane produced per acre. Methane is oxidized in the atmosphere and becomes CO2. An acre of trees absorbs 16000 lbs of CO2 each year. The average acre in these parts consists of 450 stems per acre. This would mean that each tree is sequestering roughly 36 lbs of carbon. So, if your operation has more than 2.3 trees per acre on it, you are sequestering more CO2 than you are producing. However, according to the global warming proponents, your trees will not absorb any of these dangerous greenhouse gases unless the proper mitigation paperwork if filled out - and properly. It will then need to be audited and monitored to insure its accuracy. A paper trail will need to be created to follow each tree to its end use. Lord forbid one be burned in the fireplace to provide warmth to the widow and her three children thus releasing these bad things into atmosphere. But there are equations for this as well and this can be accounted for. Now I hope you can sleep well tonight knowing I'mma sharpening my pencils.

Edit: Ooops, sorry I overlooked it but I think everyone else has as well. But your forage sequesters carbon as well. I left this out but I think it is safe to say you don't need that many trees to have a green operation. My apologies. :tiphat:

Just wait till February when we begin apologizing to the rest of the world for all of our environmental sins. No telling what US industry will be paying for. At some point, I'm afraid that you'll just have to sit in a corner and be real still to avoid paying a tax. :help:

If it goes this far, I think I'll just pick up my toys and go play elsewhere. I ain't skeered. ;-)

Looking thru a list of presidential pardons speaks volumes. Might want to check it out.

( Source = Wiki) As of November 24, 2008, President George W. Bush had issued 171 presidential pardons to people who have served their entire sentence, and has commuted in addition the sentences of eight people.

I find the phrase "served their entire sentence" enlightening. Not many "get out of jail free" cards passed out.

I have to admit I don't know the details of the pardons and should probably not have commented on those. Why would someone need a pardon if they have served their sentence - or was it shortened? I just don't like all this end of presidential term shenanigans no matter which party does it and I know they both do.

I do know enough details about Citicorp and I don't remember being asked if that's the way I want to spend my tax dollars, and my Grandchildren's tax dollars for that matter.

Thanks for the numbers on the cattle tax and trees J.

Given their are different levels of pardons as well as different levels of crime. In the case of a felony conviction, an individual would lose his civil liberties -- the right to vote, serve on a jury, own a firearm. He doesn't regain them after serving his full sentence. A pardon restores these rights.

I do have 2 charges on my record. The charges have been dropped but I still have to put them down if I apply for a job. With a pardon I would not have to think about being that wild teenager a few years back. There is something else that I can apply for from the governor (I forget what it’s called) of the state the chargers were in depending on how I pleaded when I was in court. But I pleaded guilty as charged so I’ stuck with them…

Just received this email from the Texas Animal Health Commission about the proposed EPA tax on livestock.

The Farm Bureau is seeking comments on the subject. The deadline is 11/28, which is Friday.
Not a lot of time to respond.

PM me if interested and provide your email. I can forward the complete email.

Thanks,
Farmgirl

Email from TAHC below.

Good afternoon,
On occasion, I redistribute information from other sources that is pertinent to the livestock industry. The Texas Farm Bureau
is notifying the livestock industry about EPA proposed regulations that could greatly impact producers. Comments will be
accepted until November 28, so hurry to make your voice heard.
Carla Everett, Texas Animal Health Commission

ACTION EPA DE FACTO TAX ON COWS AND HOGS
ISSUE:
On July 30, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles under the Clean Air Act. If EPA finds that greenhouse gas (GHG) (carbon dioxide, methane or nitrous oxide) emissions “endanger” public health and welfare and should be classified as a “pollutant,” it will trigger the automatic application of other sections of the Clean Air Act. This will have consequences for many sectors of the economy, including the direct regulation of agriculture under the Clean Air Act for the first time.
One of the provisions that would automatically be triggered is Title V, which requires any entity that emits more than 100 tons of a regulated pollutant per year to obtain a permit. USDA calculates that any agricultural operation with more than 25 dairy cows, 50 head of beef cattle or 200 hogs emit more than 100 tons and would be required to obtain a permit. (Other types of agricultural production would also be directly subject to or indirectly affected by the Title V permit requirement.) AFBF submitted comments opposing the rule making and plans to file more detailed comments by the comment deadline. A copy of AFBF’s comments is attached along with talking points.

IMPACT:

USDA statistics indicate that the permit requirement would include 99 percent of milk production, more than 90 percent of beef production and more than 95 percent of all hog production in the United States . The permit fee varies from state to state, but for states using the EPA “presumptive minimum rate” this could amount to $175 per dairy cow, $87.50 per beef cattle and over $20 per hog. This amounts to a de facto tax on cows and hogs.

ACTION:

The Advance Notice is open for public comment until November 28. We are asking state Farm Bureaus to submit comments opposing the regulation of GHGs under the Clean Air Act. We also ask state Farm Bureaus to get as many of their members as possible to submit comments opposing this rulemaking. We have attached some information and materials to assist in this effort. Submit your comments, identified by Docket ID No. EPA-HQ-OAR-2008-0318, by one of the following methods:
