Abscess

Good grief  :yuck: that animal is a lot lighter than before the 'pop'. Bet the vet didn't eat for a while after that.

Had a bull with a huge lump on his neck. He'd had it awhile, I was waiting for it to soften before slicing but that didn't happen. So constrained him well and sliced, nothing came out so sliced deeper. Eventually got to the main pocket, it was like thick custard :yuck: . There were 'passages' branching off from the pocket that were filled with firm puss like cooked spaghetti :yuck: , you could pull it out. Anyway, got most of the gunk out with the help of a syringe and peroxide and closed him up. It never did flare up again.

Gross

That's epic! One time Hubby and I took a cow to the vet with an abscess on the side of her face (wanted to make sure it wasn't lump jaw). They were so busy that day the vet worked her in the chute outside. As soon as the vet sliced her open, for some reason my husband yawned. Typical 25-30 mph Kansas wind + the velocity of the pus explosion = direct hit in hubby's mouth. Soooo gross! But I couldn't stop laughing.

One of the blackleg vaccines gave two of my cows abscesses. Switched brands and no more problems.

One abscess was quite big and painful on the cow's neck. I was 8 months pregnant and put her in the chute to clean it up for her. In a moment of chivalry, the farrier offered to do it for me. He got out his knife, poked it a little, and got sick. Husband came home, I got together the betadine scrub, a scalpel, suture, gauze, Blue kote, and a disposable razor. I shaved the bottom of it (and around the farrier's knife poke), cleaned it up to rinse the hair off, cut it just big enough to allow me to squeeze the pus out, then rinsed it with betadine, put in three stitches (hubby helped direct me with the stitches) and left a hole for drainage. Sprayed on Blu kote and turned her loose. Even at 8 months pregnant, I didn't feel nauseated. The knife poke just hurt, but once I opened it more and squeezed the pus out, the cow was much more comfy. We took the stitches out ten days later and she healed up perfectly.

That was a lot of pus. I wonder if that was from a vaccine or a banamine shot? I've heard banamine can cause nasty abscesses.
