One of the cows my son has raised from calf is bout to have her third calf n bout 4 or 5 days, she has been getting a bump on her jawbone, sticking out and downwards, it is now bigger than a golf ball, as of today. I think, it may be an abcessed tooth, from seeing them come through the sale barn swollwen like that n thats what they would say. It may not be, but how would you treat it? And or how would you know? We are going to try to get her in the head gate tomorrow to try to look, and if anyone would know should the big bump be soft, hard, or what, for an abcess? Thinking bout penn. Please if you know something to do, maybe lance, or what please tell me. thanks

A lump on the jawbone can be anything from a developing abcess to lumpy jaw to teeth problems to who knows what - and in the early stages it can be impossible to tell them apart. I would suggest getting her in the head catch and palpating the lump. Is the lump on the side of her jaw or underneath her jawbone? Is it hard or soft? An abcess is usually hard to start with, but will eventually turn soft and squishy. Is it fixed or movable? Is there any sign of an entry point for a foreign object such as a sticker or something of that nature? Is there an indentation in the lump (possible point of entry for a foreign body) ? If it is an abcess, treatment is to lance it, wash it out thoroughly with peroxide, and give her a good strong dose of penicillin. Follow that up in a few days with another washing out of the wound with peroxide, and possibly another dose of penicillin, depending on how well it's healing. This will usually only work if the lump has become soft and squishy, though. I cannot help you with the tooth or lumpy jaw problem, because those are things I have no experience with. Since you're somewhat new to this, after you gather all of the information you can, this might be a situation where you will want to consult with your vet for your own peace of mind. Just a suggestion, and I hope this helps.

Well didn't bother her that day, thought she was very near calving, n tried to help bro-n-law move some cows, and another bro-n-law get a cow some nuflor. The cow with the lump on jaw, did have calf, doing well, and lump almost gone now. I guess I will just be thankful, and keep an eye on her, n the rest of them. Thanks, for {the} reply. Hope everything goes well for you, n yours. Have a Very Merry Christmas, too.
