That Marlin X-7 has me sold anytime I can clover leaf 3 round's that is a heck of a rifle.

I can imagine.
Rifle has Marlin's version of an accutrigger on it .
You are just looking down the scope ease your finger on the trigger and boom.
I haven't stretched it out yet everything still at a 100 yard's 140 grain bullet.
I have a 410 that kick's worse.

When you get a chance load up or buy some 120 gr. HP's and see how they shoot in your rifle. They tend to do some serious damage on a deer and usually anchor them right there which might be beneficial to you in those thickets. The 140's are great but are a tougher bullet with better penetration. The 120 gr HP's hit like lightning and get the lightning strike results on smaller framed deer like you have in Texas and like we have in my area of Tennessee.

I bet that is. I really like a lever action. 7MM-08 will be my kids first deer rifle I'll buy them. I've always liked the ballistics on that caliber and recoil shouldn't be a problem.

I tried one in a Stevens 200. It kicked like a Mule. It ended up being a real nice donor rifle for another build!

I have a hard time believing that it would be much good over 300yds

You are about right there but out to 200 yards its has the punch similar to a .270 but starts dropping fast after that. Don't know why the one you shot kicked. Between me and the boys we have several and none have any kick worth mentioning. I went to the 7-08 after getting a really cool crescent shaped scar above my eye while I helped Josh shoot his first deer. Used it for several years with good results till I had to pass up one of the largest bucks I'd ever seen because he was just out of acceptable range. (Ok, I shot anyway but the bullet fell short)

I have taken deer cleanly with my Rem Model 7 in 7mm-08 at 300 yards where it still retains 1,500 lbs of energy. The 7mm-08 cartridge retains over 1,000 ft lbs of energy at 500 yards with the 140 gr bullet. I do not advocate using it at 500 yards even though 1,000 ft lbs of energy is more than enough to kill whitetail deer. With a 200 yard zero it only drops 7.8" at 300 yards which is still in the kill zone on most big game. I sight mine in 3" high at 100 yards and I can lay them in the kill zone at 300 without worrying about hold over. It is a very effective cartridge for what it is designed for which is short to mid-range shots on deer sized game.

My son killed his first deer at 8 years old with the 7mm-08 and has taken several with it since. The little Model 7 that I have is light, handy and accurate. Whenever I am hunting deep in the woods where I have to walk a bit the Model 7 is the first rifle I reach for.

I sighted mine in using a MPBR range chart that put's it dead on at 287 yard's is 2.5 inches high at 100.
I am not shooting any farther than that and I doubt that far. I bought the rifle to hunt south Texas,

Hoss, I agree the round is much more capable than what many would think but if given a choice for longer distances I will reach for the .270, .260, or 30..06 before I take the 708. I use mine in the woods and the swamp and it has killed a pile of deer and hogs but if I'm shooting in more open conditions I take one of the others. I just like these rounds better because judging the distance doesn't seem as critical in my mind.

I once was sitting in a stand over a long foodplot when four does stepped out at the far end of the food plot. They were 300 yards away. I had four shells and went into kill mode flipping the switch on the Browning from bolt action to semi-auto. Dropped the first doe at the far end of the field and the others ran toward me and when the rifle was empty only one doe made it to safety.

Mine has the kick of a .243 but the knockdown is much, much better.

I'm sure someone can run the ballistics for you but the short of it I don't think there would be much difference in shots under 400 yards other than the difference in the kick between the two. I think the real difference is on longer shots you would be able to carry more energy down range with a 7mm using a larger bullet than would be possible with a 7-08 but this is just my opinion and I'll be happy to be corrected.

One of the best things I see about the 7-08 is it is extremely accurate and has little to no recoild and I think some of its accuracy can be attributed to your subconsious mind not anticipating the recoil.

I will agree to that I gave away a Remington 700 ADL in 7 mag.
I hated that rifle it was the worse kicking firearm I ever owned.

I have a .270WSM that is the same way. I thought it might add a little something in the power range but all this is thwarted by accuracy loss due to the kick. I really hate to admit that. Would love to blame it on the rifle but put it in a vice and the thing will drive tacs. I just can't shoot it worth a dam because I'm weak, soft and just all around unworthy of the round.

Another good thing about the 7-08 is the speed you can shuck another shell in it since its short. Its not often you go into semi-auto mode with a bold action but it does happen occasionally.

Here is an interesting comparison chart from Federal. The .270 is on my bucket list as a caliber to own.......so many calibers so little money :mrgreen:

My first was a blr in 243, and for a first i would still go with it, over a 7mm-08. i am real bad about liking a gun and then buying a bunch of the same one in different callibers. i have 7 blr's now.

The 7-08 is definitely a great caliber. This is what I bought my boys and I believe we have three laying around the house. I think with all things being equal you could say there is little difference between the .270 and the 7-08 but I believe your can tweek the .270 round to reach out and do a few things the 7-08 can't do or at least I don't feel comfortable doing with the 7-08.

I was deer hunting today over some cotton land that is being destroyed by deer. Today was the third try at planting this little nook that goes into the woods. At $700 a bag for seed the deer are causing a real problem and with the monster mosquitoes this last storm brought in I wasn't about to sit in the woods where I would be sucked dry of my blood so I set up in the middle of some new ground and my shots were pushing 600 yards at the furthest points.

Jo, is that the .260 in the picture? You definitely have some good flat ground to shoot across. You need to get a .50 Barrett just for the entertainment value. Set up a 1,000 yards out and do a bit of plinking on those pesky deer :lol:
