Vet out until Monday. 7 mo old show calf - bull. More blood then manure coming out of his rectum. He is with 6 other show calves that are all roughly the same age. Coccidiosis? If so I will administer Corid in their water tank. Any other ideas? Would an injection of something help? Anything else I should look for?

Thanks

To be sure that Corid will do anything, why not take a stool sample to the vet and have him/her/it check it for coccidiosis

Yes Sir.....thats the plan for Mon when the vet gets back. Until then I figured I better take some type of action.

All I ever really noticed before was pretty runny stool but I figured it was from the show feed. All of a sudden ...blood and a good bit of it.

A shot of LA200 wouldn't hurt anything either would it?

Does he have a temp? If not, why give antibiotics. My first move woulf be to take him off of his current feed and put him on a straight grass hay diet.

I just got back from feeding. Didn't notice a temp so I didn't give him a shot of LA.

Good idea to pull him off of feed. I fed him tonight and added Corid to their water. I will pull him off of feed tomorrow.

I noticed that he is actually dripping straight blood. Can't wait till Monday to see the Doc.

Thanks Dun!!

Some show calves fed very high powered rations and too little hay or other roughage can develop leasions in the stomach lining. When this gets severe it will start bleeding. We have had a couple of these. Don't remember what the vet gave them but we also had to add baking soda to the feed to help.
Give him extra hay and less feed until you can talk to the vet on Monday.
Also takes quite a while to get them back on feed and gaining. The ones we had never finished by the target date.

Any chance of grass teteny ?
It won't hurt a thing to pour some magnesium salts down just in case.

Being a show calf, my bet is he ate too much grain, too quickly. This causes acidosis, which will make the lining of the small intestine to "sluff" & cause bleeding. Are you seeing any "membrain" type stuff with the manure & blood?
Anyway, best to pull all grain & give good hay. BiCarb given free choice will help. If it's acidosis, he should be fine after a few days of just hay. When you start him back on grain, be sure to go SLOW.

Thanks so much! I thought about acidosis but ruled it out because of all of the blood. I have never had an acidosis case though so I do not know what to expect. He is very alert and seems to feel fine. I did dig in his manure some and it did look like some membrane in it...maybe?.....it looked like a skin of dried blood. I did seperate him today on Dun's advice and put him on hay only. He did not like looking through his pen seeing the others get their grain. I drenched him with Corid today which shouldn't hurt him any just because I really didn't know. I sure apreciate the help!!! :cboy:

Thanks all!! He looks so much better today and already, no blood. Will go to vet tomorrow afternoon now. He looks great.
