holstein heifers i can not quote on

but a 600 lb jersey heifer is worth big money around here if she has any quality at all. hard to find even bottle heifers in the jersey breed less than several hundred dollars.

Well i was thinking of buying either some older holstein cows or jersey cows and hoping to god that it was a heifer but just a thought.....And some man has some yearling jersey heifers idk the weight but i was going to call him

Yearling can mean anything from 12 to 23 months old. If they are older than 16 months, they should be bred. Many dairy cattle are bred so that they calve at 2 yrs.

The price of a dairy heifer is not determined by weight, but by age. If they are registered, they could cost over $1000. If the they are grade, they could cost around $750 + depending on your location.

There are people who deal in dairy stock like horse traders. It can be a buyer beware situation. Good luck.

I use them for nurse cows so that is my perspective.

The first thing I look for is quality of the animal and its milking potential. Are they going to maintain themselves on little feed supplement and produce enough milk to feed four calves when they are in their prime?

The second thing I look for is how gentle this gal is going to be. Will they go in the crate to take orphan calves etc? I do not mind a little bit of a flight zone if they will follow a feed bucket. Will I be able to turn them to pasture with the calves once they calves have nursed them for a few days and obtained their scent?

The third thing I look at is the price. Can I make enough money on this gal at that price and it be worth my time too?

Dixie depending on their quality you could have some valuable animals. In this area Jersey heifers have never brought the money of holsteins. I haven't really kept up with the dairy market lately but if they are what some like to call "fancy" heifers the holstein could be worth $800 up. The jersey more like $450-500. Right now the holstein is too small to breed so that will hurt you some as she would just be dead weight for awhile.
