Had tractor idling while I washed cow **** off the disk mower. All of a sudden the tractor hiccups then dies. White/gray smoke rolled out from under the hood right above the injection pump.

Tried cranking after it cooled off but seems like it isnt getting fuel.

Going to dig into it this evening. Curious if that rings a bell for anyone.

Does it smoke when you crank? If not it is not getting fuel. Check everything from the tank to the injector pump. Could be trash in the bottom of the tank or stopped up including the fuel filter all the way to the injection pump. Also it may have come unprimed. Check at the injectors and see if fuel comes out when cranking after verifying all the lines are clean and the air is out.

Also the white smoke is a good indicator of water and maybe you fuel filter is full. See if any will drain out the bottom of the filter housing. Had a similar incident happen like this and it was water.

Turns out the fuel line feeding the filter head cracked from vibrating against the nut. Get ya everytime!

Smoke must have been fuel hitting something hot?
Some things are tricky. My diesel generator started losing its prime, the tank is in the base and I would have to give a few pumps of the lift pump before starting it. I decided to look into it when It was getting harder and harder to start. There is a non return valve on the fuel line from the tank so I thought I would start there on undoing it I noticed the arrow on the valve was pointing back to the tank. I have had this generator from brand new, it is about 4 years old and it has been sucking fuel through this valve the wrong way all this time. The motor does seem happier now, can't be a very efficient valve.

Is there suppose to be an o-ring or something kind of seal inside the fuel line nut? This is the line that feeds into the water separator from the tank.

The line isnt cracked. Is it possible it just blew the seal?

Maybe a dumb question.

Line have a brass nut on it and the end of the steel line is flared out kind of like a bell?

Google "cav fuel line olive" to see a picture of the seal. It is just a piece of rubber fuel line cut to fit into the compression nut.

Replace the olive and you'll be good to go. If you have a good diesel shop around or even napa they typically have them on hand. Or grab the appropriate size rubber fuel line and try to make good square cuts and slice some off.

There wasnt one that came out when I took the line loose. Ciuld it have disintegrated and got caught upstream? I know I didnt drop anything.

They a common weat item? To just go all of a sudden?

Ill hit Napa tomorrow.

As usual... U the man!

If it disintegrated if shouldn't end up in the fuel system as it's on the outside of the steel line and inside the nut.

Not a common wear item but definitely an item to replace when you have them apart. I've had them randomly start leaking out of the blue before (they are 30-60 years old). Then you have a fuel leak while running and an air leak when off so it won't restart.

Is this the thing youre talkin about? Theyre calling it a spacer.

Ill make one out of fuel like as you suggested.
