How many times have you heard the statement; I can go anywhere you can with my 2wd?
Was in superslick mud this morn. and had to go to 4wd and it always reminds me of a brother of mine telling me he don't need 4wd can go where I go. I've had to pull him out several times.

Of course those that say that usually stay on the roads, My grandfather used to sy=ay the same thing, but if he had to get into an area with mud and muck he went to the tractor, but he could go anywhere in his 2wd that I did in my 4wd...

two wheel drive if one wheel slips and the diff is free then you have no wheel drive

four wheel drive and a front and back wheel slip and a free diff you have no wheel drive

so it comes down to you have one wheel drive compared to two wheel drive.

Best money you could spend on either is put an electric diff locker on either and get real drive

There are huge differences in the "drives". The more tires you have spinning on the ground the better.

Most of the people who say they only need 2wd don't go places where you need 4wd.... so they are correct... in a scewed way.

Driver abilities is very important... but assuming that is equal.
These are the diffierent "drives":
Open diff
Locking diff/ posi trac
open diff 4wd (acually 2 tires spinning, one front one back)
True 4wd (all four spin all the time)

We have put them all to the test. :D :D My Z-71 comes with locking diffs all the way around. I can out climb and out pull the same truck with open diff,, both being "4wd".

My z71 also has front and back locking. It sure makes a difference when all 4 wheels are used for traction. This is what I call a true 4wd.

Had a 83 Ram Charger some years back. That thing was like a tank on tracks. Had several pickups since and they did very well in 4wd. Guess the biggest surprise is the 87-F250-6.9 . Got in some pretty sloppy mud the first year I had it and had to leave it in the lot and get a tractor to pull it out. It never went down stuck. Just stuck on top of the ground or the fence was in the way.:P Engine and front end is so heavy it just goes the way it's leaning. Put some more aggressive tires on and it's a little better. In sloppy mud I think it'd be better to have ski's on the front.

Back in my younger days I'd go pretty much where a 4wd did. But had to do it at 3 times the speed and had rear tires (N50 Dune Diggers) close to flotation type. After breaking several front shocks I finally saw the light. Was young then and it was fun. I couldn't move after a ride like that now.

You think that's bad, try a dually. They suck even worse. When it comes to mud it's hard to beat a 1/2 ton pickup.

Never owned a dually but heard my neighbor (the horse guy) say his won't move on grass if there's a heavy dew, unless it locked in 4wd. Guess it's like my old non 4wd dump truck.I've had to leave it after a shower of rain till the next day. It's a great drought truck though.

Friend of mine bought a 99 model 250 4 door long bed 2wd.
Let the salesman talk him into it. Can't even get in the pasture with a heavy dew. Wife uses it only to pull her GN 30 ft horse trailer in dry weather. Rest of the time it sets in the barn. He now owns a 05 3/4 ton Duramax 4door 4wd short bed. I have a 1/2 Z71, being lighter I can go where he cant but can't near pull the load he can. I have to add that I have 235,000mi on mine and only have had to replace the front rotors. I have always serviced it reguarly, worked the heck out of it but never mistreated it. 5.3 engine and 20 and 21mpg. and I don't plan on getting rid of anytime soon.

Very true. 4WD without the locking differentials is a waste. I'd get the locking rear before 4WD without a locking rear, but you put them together and it'll go anywhere you ought to go in a truck.

Even with lockers all the way around, it still isn;t worth much without the right tires.
Bought a used chevy 4x4 with positrac that had new tires on it. My wifes car with front wheel drive could go places that the useless truck couldn;t manage.

Front wheel drive cars are bad mo-fos because they are light weight and have the right weight distribution over the drive tires,,, onle down fall is round clearance.

I run those BFG All-Terrains and they take me where I need to go.. even with trailers usually. I have ran both the A/Ts and M/Ts and I haven't gone any where with the M/Ts that I couldn't go with the A/Ts,,, it just took a little more tire spinning. It is worth is for the longer life and better ride of the A/Ts. I usually get around 65K mi out of them. :D
