4H steer candidate

OK. I'll bite. I like him more the longer I watch the video. He does track pretty good when he settles down some, but when he really gets out and moves, those back pasterns have a bit more forward flex in them than I like to see. It could cause issues when he is a fat. Watch the first part of the video, right before he places his back feet. He is also a touch round in his make up, which causes him to look like his tailhead sits a bit forward. Now, to make up for all that, I wil say I actually think he would make a good 4H level steer. Will he win the major? Probably not. Will he have a good shot at county fair? He would around our area! First and foremost, he is obviously docile, which is in my mind the first thing on the list for a junior project. Second, he has some real mass and muscle, with a nice wide top and spring of rib. He also carries his topline well and his shoulders lay in nice and smooth. Major bonus....he is RED! I love my reds and as they say, a really good one is way hard to find. I think with proper management and feeding, and an awareness of his pasterns, he could feed out very well for a junior. Now, the questions for you:
1. How is he bred?
2. What is that fantastic cow he is standing next to at the end of the video???

His sire is Limousin (Hi Valley Timeline 5Z), and the cow is the momma, she's Gelbvieh sired, Saler, with a bit of hereford way back... She done good for a small cow, 3rd calf... I'm waiting for her to give me a heifer and see what she can do with that. Watching the video again I do see what you mean with his pasterns, thanks for pointing that out.

Grrr.. $%^$ hobby/horse people!
Talk for 2 weeks, yes, son wants the steer, can you have him weaned before you bring him? aww alright.

Sure enough, 2 days before delivery cancel because I wanted to be sure I didn't sell for below auction price
5wts are averaging 2.90,
6wts are averaging 2.88.
I was looking for $1700 delivered an hour out of my path... I don't think I was overcharging, rather I'd look like a fool if I bent over backward any more

Good point. You would have. Also, if you weaned, you probably lost some pounds and added some feed costs to your bottom line. With your sale barn price at 600 lbs, I'd be asking a minimum of $2k, especially if delivering.

Were they countering with a lower price?

They were going for $1600... I'll tell them when I bring him to the auction in 2 weeks, and if they want, they can bid on him, and see it was a dumb idea not to take him for $1700... I'm still going to put some feelers out, there's a big show next weekend and perhaps I can find a buyer there

First of all really nice calf.. I do agree with Boot Jack Bulls on the forward flex on his back pasterns and tail head set. I would add he looks unsmooth in the junction from the rump to the flank area.. Feeding him out will fix this I think.. Darn nice calf, and yes he will make a good 4H steer because of all the positives he has. (Docility, muscle, length, etc)
