Third set of twins today...first set, one grafted successfully to a heifer. Second set, one was stillborn, but other was healthy....Today, got a almost identical set of bulls. In fact, if i hadnt seen the cow with a new one with a mottled face and accidentally seen one in the woods with the same mottled face, i may have never realized they were twins. Tried the cow to see if she knew both were hers by taking it to her...nope...So, i have another candidate for grafting..
So glad i saw the twin, it was only a fluke that i did see it. I have calves everywhere, so its getting harder and harder to see a new calf among so many laying around.. It just happened to look up and i saw the white on its face, i was about 75 yards away and all alone in the woods away from the cows. If it had been solid black, i wouldnt have seen it. Anywho, he's fed and happy now.
We culled though heifers and bulls this morning to sell. Put the rest of the calving heifers in our calving lot and threw out the few that calved the past couple days into the big pasture. There are 13 left. Odds give us a good chance i'll lose one of theirs, lost only one so far out of 31 heifers....and if we do, i have her one waiting.
A few days ago, husband went with me to check cows. I pointed out this smallish angus cow and said, she's going to have twins. Now, i've said this many times and am about 50% right or 50% wrong..lol..

Calf had a puncture wound on his hip....didnt think much of it but it did seem deep. This morning lots of swelling...Took to vet where it was shaved to treat...uncovered cat claw marks.. Puncture wound went to spine.. I did not see anything the first time i checked out this calf....5 min later when i went back to get it, he had a drop of blood on the top of his hip, so i must have scared cat off...this morning his hips were swollen so we hauled to vet..Large pocket at puncture wound with bone fragments off of spine... Same area where we had cat maulings last year...so i'm guessing i have a big cat living somewhere in that area.. Moved cows to another pasture.

Picture while calf was at vet... looks horrible. Vet had to open fang puncture to dig out bone fragments. Calf is lucky to be alive to live to be burger..lol eventually someone is going to eat him..
