So it has happened...

Looking at the East Texas Livestock report from 3/25/14, 2wt & 3wt steers topped out at 317.5 & 315. 2wt heifers topped out at 310. Does the current calve prices change the direction of your cow calf operation? Are you selling(culling wink wink) more calves vs retaining more? Are you thinking of buying breds ?

I'm buying some heavys this week... so I 'm liking what I'm what seeing...

Look at the prices of 8 weights. If you can buy one, keep your input low and grow it out to an 8 weight, there's a good profit margin.

Personally I am thinking bottle calves may have profit margin again even with the high cost of milk replacer.

We have to be willing to adapt to markets and strategy. If a window of opportunity opens, someone is going to take advantage of it. Supply and demand has always been a factor in any economy. US cattle herd is lowest inventory since 1951. You can't just go plow up 100 acres and plant cows.
 
I have actually retained more over the last 3 or 4 years than I used to. I have also toyed with buying heavys, but as I have said before, it all depends on the weather for grass & hay production.

Your right, the small calves under 350lbs still work. 350 to 600lbs calves don't look good.
 
I'm going to try buying heavy bred cows and selling as pairs until calf prices come back down. Depending on how I do I may just stick with pairs, we'll see.
 
Sold some 485 to 510 lb bull calves for $2.18 last Tuesday, And bought four cows 7 month bred for a small fortune.i hope! I'm still young enough to over come it.

Wednesday there was a group of 5 year old black cows with 305lb calves on them bring 2950$ a pair at a sale in this area, and the cows were not bred back either. That might make you feel better.
 
Just bought a bottle heifer for $105. Bought a two week old twin heifer for $300. Think I'll come out sweet on both. Chased several dairy heifers for nurse cow prospects. Finally took a really nice one for $165. She weighs close to 90 lbs.

My grandsons are going to get some more experience out of this.
