Anyone owned an expedition. It has a the 5.4 v8. 85,000. Miles on speedometer. My daughter has a friend selling it and she would like a bigger vehicle. She wants something big enough to haul her daughters rodeo gear, and sons baseball equipment. If anyone knows inherent problems with them I would appreciate the heads up.

The known problems with the 5.4L motors is spits out plugs in the older 2v motors after that the next problem with the 3v ones is the plugs would snap off in the heads. I am not sure if all that has been cleared up by that year. The 5.4L have a tick in them thats really freaking annoying. Its a PITA to change plugs in the back on the 5.4L's .. front end suspension is weak part of the ford trucks and suv's. However they are a dependable motor and will tow well but it will drink gas like an ox drinks water.
 
I think the spark plug issues were pretty well resolved by '08. I don't have any direct experience with later model Expeditions either. We did have an older one (can't remember the year, it was the last year of the old body style... '04 maybe) and liked it a lot. I'll bet she'd enjoy that '08. Around here though, the Tahoe/Yukon outnumbers the Expedition at least 3 to 1... Not sure if there's a reason why or it just is. We do have an '06 Explorer 4x4 with the 4.6 V8 that has 160K + miles and still rides and drives great. Never had a bit of trouble with it.

:lol2: I know one problem that wasn't resolved is how much of a P.I.T.A it is to change that back passenger side plug.
 
Yeah, I can't argue that one - I was just meaning the blowing out and breaking off plugs. It's funny that the 4.6 isn't all that much smaller a block than the 5.4, yet all the plugs are relatively easy to access in the smaller bodied Explorer. I've had pretty good luck with 5.4's over the years (kinda like my 6.0 Ford diesels) but I went with a 6.0 gas Chevy this time, at least partly because they're so much easier and cheaper to work on. I kind of like looking under the hood and being able to see (and get to) the motor so much better than any other truck I looked at.

I know I have trucks with the 5.4's no spit out or broken plugs like most people had. They said the plugs were rated for 100k miles well I changed mine every 30k so no carbon build up to hold them in and for them to break. Even with the newer trucks I have I still change ever 30k. Please never ever mention 6.0 ford diesel when talking to me again :lol2: I like having space under the hood to work. I remember grandpa and uncles climbing up and getting in the motor of those old fords and chevy trucks they had there was room to put your feet on the frame and sit on the finder lol
 
Can't speak for the 2008 model, but I have a '97 with 330K+ miles that has been flawless! Bought it when my son was 3 months old; now he is driving it. Driveway is clean as a whistle underneath it; doesn't leak a drop. Have used it to pull way more than it is rated for. Converted to Mobil 1 at 90K miles. I agree that the plugs are a major PITA to change on the 5.4; but they will go for 100K. Not the most fuel efficient either - get 15-16 mpg with the 3.73 rear end.

If im not mistaken you got the first year or maybe 2nd with that body style of that era and the heads had more threads in them at first which is why you probably never had any issues.
