The animal had initially tested positive for BSE but further tests at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Tokyo confirmed the animal did not have BSE.
Had the results come back positive for BSE, Japanese officials had indicated this would impact the situation regarding U.S. beef to Japan. The two sides agreed that beef shipped to Japan would come from animals 20 months or younger as Japan indicated it had previously they have found the disease in an animal that was 21 months old.
