Wife is 48 and I'll be 54 in a few days. Neither one of us has ever left a job involuntarily. Well, up until a few days ago. Wife got laid off last Friday. Tuesday morning she was checking the want ads, updating her resume, and going over a couple of applications. I kissed her good-bye, went off to work ............... and got laid off. Weird, huh? Both are small companies having trouble competing with the big boys, but neither one of us saw it coming.

Anyway, we're not too concerned yet, and none of you should be, either. I still have my pension. Not enough over the long haul, but it'll get us by for awhile. Plus we have a tidy little reserve stashed away for emergencies. We'd rather not touch it, but it's there if worse comes to worse. In other words, we're a lot better off than many others in this situation, and once we got over the shock, we promptly started counting our blessings.

Went and applied to three places yesterday. Got a call this afternoon from one of them and already have an interview scheduled for Monday afternoon. Nice to know not everyone thinks I'm a used up old fart. That, or they're really desperate. :lol: Even better, the one I was hoping would call first did. Bad news is the wife is ticked because I've already got an interview and she hasn't had so much as a nibble. ;-)

Anyway, thanks for listening. I just needed to get this off my chest.

Van, sorry to hear about your jobs, but it sounds like you have a great attitude about it. Always helps to count your blessings. If you can't find jobs in Illinois, send some resumes to Texas. We've still got plenty of job openings.

Good luck to you Van. Don't get down about it either. It happened to me in the mid 80's right in the middle of the oilfield crunch here. I was competing with all kinds of petro engs, chem engs etc. Turns out that lay-off was the best thing that happened to me. No way for me to be where I am without that push. So keep your chin up. Don't settle for the little one either. Your wisdom shows in your words. You're a good 'un.

A lot of folks are an eyeblink away from the same fate, Van. The difference is...most of us, most definitely including you and your wife, don't sit back and play the blame game.

I know where the blame belongs, even tho you won't agree, and that's ok. :) Because I know that you, and most of us, know there's little use in laying righteous blame where it belongs when food needs to be put on the table. Because you, and most of us, realize that moaning and groaning is not in our character...that we will stand up and shake our fists at the crap that's befallen us and dare it to take us down.

Sorry to hear that Van but good luck to both you and your wife. I was talking to a friend of mine last weekend who is Going to be laid off next month. The company asked him to go to Mexico over Christmas to teach them how to use the equipment he won't be using after next month. If he didn't do it, he would lose his severance package and all benefits. COLD is all I can say for his company.

There is a special place for people who treat others like this...even though it feels like the ones who are getting screwed are already there.

What do you and the Mrs. do?... No resume needed but a "short and brief" might catch someone's eye... you never know.
We know so many people that this has happened to... it makes us THANK GOD we've been so fortunate... we'll keep your family in our prayers (as backhoe said) that this is the best thing to happen to you... just look for the good...you may not see it right away but its there. Time for an update. First of all, I want to thank all of you for all the encouragement and advice.

I have two job offers on the table. I'm about 95% sure which one I'm going to take, but will make the decision by tomorrow afternoon. Will let you know more when all is said and done.

The place that laid off my wife has laid off two more people since then, including one person that had been there for over 20 years. In other words, it doesn't look like she'll be going back there any time soon, but then we weren't counting on that happening. She's still looking and her spirits are high. We're fortunate to live in an area where there are jobs to be had if you look for them. Sometimes it just takes a little time. This has definitely been a learning experience for both of us.
