So my 14 year old prolapse cow, the C section first timer, and 2 calves were sold on 11/9, just got the check
Old cow, 1400 lbs (I think) @ $.68
C section, 990 lbs @ $1.21 (wow, surprised me.. perhaps they thought she was a heifer!)
2 steers, 420 lbs avg, $1.81

All in all I got more than I figured... I thought the old cow would bring a little more, the C section first timer a little less, Steers were good looking, and got $.20 /lb more than the same weights in September.
 
Trending around the same here, cows been on the way down, feeders seem to be rebounding a bit. Right or wrong I'm holding everything til after the new yr now.
 
First big bred cow sale here is on "black" Friday. Usually the hobby guys are there with calf checks burning a hole in their pockets. Hindsight is older cows should have gone last year. Kill market for common cows is in the mid 40s to 50s...
 
I did a big cull of 5 cows last year and I'm glad I did.. I was hoping Alma would have a heifer this year again (and not prolapse)... Her steer sired by my homeraised bull looked pretty nice

I'm thinking that even though he is basically against NAFTA, that he has also made a few comments that makes me think that he is open to mutually beneficial trade....and there are enough GOOD cattlemen and farmers on that advisory board that we might be less likely to go against you all up north. There is too much mutual trading of cattle back and forth, and the threat of disease from the beef imports from South America, might align us better on the same side.
 
Nesi we might be in the same country but we sure aren't seeing the same prices as you are!
Prices have been steadily climbing here since the last couple of weeks in October.

We sold Nov 7 and thought we did alright. Would've done a lot better had we waited a couple weeks and sold yesterday but we aren't going to start complaining.
These were our averages (minus the oddballs that didn't fit with any of the groups)
14 blk & red steers 522 lbs - $1.8125
13 blk steers 591 lbs - $1.80
7 red steers 604 lbs - $1.7650
12 red, 1 blk steers 668 lbs - $1.7175
17 black & red heifers 460lbs - $1.5475
12 black heifers 569lbs - $1.5475
6 black heifers 624 lbs - $1.5025
11 red heifers 562lbs - $1.5575
9 red heifers 612lbs - $1.5075

Most were pretty much right at average price or slightly above.
There was about 500 limo calves that sold way above everything else that day (10 cents higher), which sure made the overall sale average go up quite a bit.

Pretty much everything would've brought 5-10 cents higher had we sold yesterday.

Your 420lb steers would've brought around $2.20 yesterday in Veteran. Slaughter cows averaged $0.92 yesterday. We sold some cull cows a few weeks ago and the average that day was $0.78 so even they are up quite a bit. You did well on the C-section heifer though!

Under 500lb calves have came up over 20 cents in the last week and a half. We were buying little flyweights (under 400lbs) in late September/October and are glad we bought when we did. We were averaging just over $500/head on the ones we bought - to buy the same calves now we'd be looking at $700+.
 
Wow, markets, who can figure them out!

you always get at least a 10 cent premium over what we get here, you have all the slaughter houses and feed lots pretty much next door... For us, well.. SOMEONE has to pay the trucking! I know I can't make it pay to bring them over there load by load
 
People are all over the place on what Trump "said" or might do. The most basic and consistant comments he has made is that he is a"great negotiater" and manager. So far the people he has nominated will support his larger plans. As for Nafta I would expect some tough negotiations from a well prepared and researched position. I guess my one concern is his position on American ag and whether he is a supporter of big ag and big corporate ag like the Earl Butz mold or if he will support policies for smaller family farmers.
