Stopped by the local feed mill on the way home today and someone had put a small 8 1/2 by 11 sign saying Hay - $10 a round bale. Being a small town, and everyone knowing everybody, I asked what was the catch, and who was the guy.

Called him this past evening and the conversation was too good to be true. He's a young guy trying to make ends meet. He mostly has square bales but has 60 round bales. He would deliver them for $5 /bale extra. He is about 20 miles from my house. Hay was cut between hurricanes (September), and has been stored outside. Alicia bermuda. 4 x 5 bales from 1200 to 1400 lbs. Not wanting to be greedy, I asked for 20. Something about this seems to good to be true.

Wish that all our friends next door in Texas and OK could get some of this hay...if it is in fact as good as it sounds.

Well, you're fixing to find out, for $15 a bale it doesn't have to be stellar - just good quality hay. I'm sure you already know this, but there are a few people out there who won't try to cash in on other people's misfortunes, and there are also a few people who are simply inexperienced and don't know the value of what they are selling. I also wish the good people of Texas and Oklahoma had access to this hay, it would solve a lot of problems for a while at least. I sincerely hope everything turns out and please let us know how it works out? Thanks.

$10 hay id jump on the whole lot.good or bad the hay is worth that.i got lucky an found hay for that price.an bought all the guy had.he was like its 3 to 4yrs old.i go dont matter the hay is still good.ill take it.

After you get your 20 bales, tell the guy to truck the rest to Texas and sell it for $75 bales all day long. He is trying to make ends meet. I think we all have been their one time or another.

cypress, sounds like a deal. If you have public scales or a cotton gin nearby it might be interesting to load up a few on your trailer and do a loaded/empty weight comparison to see if those bales really weigh 1,200 to 1,400.

We were real lucky in the area I live in. Hay was plentiful and not a real bad summer, although it did get pretty dry. Last hay I bought was $12 delivered. :cboy:

There are a few people in our area trying to sell hay for $10/roll (5x4) this year. Not the best stuff, but everyone has extra this year, just as they did last year. When I have extra, I sell 5x4's for $20 no matter what the supply or demand is. I keep the same customers from year to year, and not one of them complains. Three years ago I could have gotten $35 to $40 per roll but I won't take advantage of a situation like that to make more money from people who have been loyal customers for years. And they don't mind paying $20 this year when everyone else is getting $15. Go figure.

It's called integrity and loyalty, and it sounds like you have it. Wish more people did; it seems to be scarce.

I sell 5 x 5 for $30 this year. I have sold it for years for $25 but I had to go up this year. I stopped by to visit each of my regular customers this fall and explained the increase cost of production to each of them. They all understood and put in their normal order.

That young man has character. It's better to have character than to be one. Character is, "doing the right thing when nobody is looking." :D

wish we could get some hay for that price.id have to tell him its worth more.thats just the way i am.although he probably wouldnt charge any extra id sleep better knowing i didnt take advatage of someone.here in texas ive seen adds for round bales at $60 and square bales at $6.50.

Coolwater, I think your right, and I plan to offer him $25/bale; which is the normal going rate.

I have a friend that stumbles across good deals all the time. It’s not by accident. Good thing happen to good people. Maybe you can help him sell the rest of his hay.

I just paid $10 a bale the other day for a 5x5 good hay. My cows are doing watch duty over it. Its like they are afraid some cows are gonna come and steal it away. You guys in Texas we too can remember the dry cold winters with no hay. We had to have hay trucked in from north west.
Bless you all for hanging in there for your cows.

The sad thing is I actually sold rounds in the early spring last year not knowing I'd be haying in July. The horse folks want my stuff. They are going to be disappointed this year. Some are friends and I hope I don't lose them.

I have picked up 1000 foot of irrigation pipe for the lower field. I will get plenty of fertilizer too. There won't be any hay leaving until my cows have more than plenty stored.

look at it this way backhoeboogie if you loose them then they really wernt friends after all right.friends stay with ya till the end.its been hard around here.but we are pushing on through each day.im rationing the hay.feeding good suppliments.it really hasnt been very cold.my stock looks really good.i can get rice bran 12% very cheap.sweetfeed 10% also cheap enough and throw a little corn and rice to the mix they eat well.ive seen some guys selling off their cattle.i guess it comes to a financial discision.me im in it cause i want to and raising cattle keeps me busy.it also helps that im just not happy without cows.so if i have to ill go down with my cattle or push through for another day.its all the same to me.

I bought good coastal for 5.00 a bale in November. Naturally, when I needed more he had sold out. I had a guy from Rockwall that bought a donkey from me in January that was selling for 6.50. Should have bought from him. The local feed store down the road was getting 80.00 for round bales last time I checked. He's gone up by now. Folks are getting desperate around here for hay. I saw a fellow that had baled his wheat and was selling it for 2.50. I don't think my donks would eat it.

I have seen the most rotten/nasty hay loaded on trucks around here it's not even funny. I would sell my cows before feeding some of the crap that has been come in. I watched a guy load up 3 year old hay that has been outside in the weather for 3 years. It had been pushed into a pile about 6 months ago to be burned. No way those bales stayed together on the trip home. That stuff would have made billy goats sick.

Hoping for a early spring.... with lots of rain.
