First heifer of this years group calved today . Came through the gate to find 4 grazing and 6 at the hay feeder . Saw the bull at the corral with a baby standing next to him . Ok , something told me it wasn’t his . So whose baby is this ? Finally one of the solid black ones came over to claim her baby ,

Long slim calf is a good sign for the rest if the same bull.

I think it is always nice when I see the first calf on the ground and it is a healthy calf up and about. hope the rest of your calving season goes well.

No sir our heifer bull that died . He was an ultra black . I’m sick all over again ; when he died and seeing this calf

I don't blame you. He damn sure throwed a good calf! Are the other heifers bred to him?

Yes sir . For some reason 1 heifer didn’t breed or came back in heat about midway through her pregnancy . Out of 11 last year only one big calf . Probably just a right combination on the genes .

My young bull out of VAR Generation is throwing some small calves so far . Probably use him on the next heifer group and get a higher birthweight bull for that group of cows .

2 down 8 to go . Pictures later . Mom was bonding so I left her alone . Getting this front tonight with storms and then the bottom falls out of the thermometer for Monday and Tuesday . That’s a sure sign there may be 2-3 born .

Same here. 70 right now, low in the teens by tomorrow night, then back up to the 70's Wednesday. They say up to 70mph winds tomorrow. Nice looking couple of calves you got there, @coachg !

You probably want to dump her asap. There could be a host of issues that caused that you dont want any part of.

Got her with the bull for a month . If she cycles again she’s gone . Of course she’s the biggest , prettiest one of the bunch . Out of a cow we’ve never got a heifer out of her before .

About an inch of snow . If the ground hadn’t been so warm it would have been 2-3 . Caught me putting out hay this morning .

What age are the heifers? They look good.

Most are 22-24 months old . Home grown . I use to breed them to calves at 30 months but gave up letting them get full grown for getting an extra calf

Just like I figured #3 was in labor around 5 pm . Water bag/ bubble showing . Had city council meeting at 6 and left at 6:45 when meeting was over . She was at hay feeder with 6-8 other heifers and there’s the calf trying to find which one was his momma . Picked him up and carried him to the other side of the small pasture . Tried to get her to go to him but she was being goofy and running to the other 2 calves . Finally she found it and started out in the pasture . Don’t know the sex but it’s red ! Momma is a black baldie . Her momma is Hereford and sire was black angus . The calf is out of the ultra black bull who was out of a brangus cow and our original heifer bull . I’ll post a pic in the morning .
