Hello board,

Wondering if any fellow cattlemen are running Cummins Diesels that tend to run warm?

I have an '01 and seem to have a little trouble in the summer time keeping the temp down when under load. I'm suspicious of the CC breather bottle up front,....(maybe oil vapors have gouped up the rad fins?)

Thought I'd see if anyone had dealt with this, and what the best solution is.

I doubt the bottles given you much grief, as when it fills up the fan usually pushes the oil back. You have checked the intercooler and rad for pluggin up? Fins all in good shape?

I'd suspect a thermostat myself. Go buy one from a Cummins or Dodge shop, stay away from jobbers. The CTD should not be overheating at all, since I used to tow 30K with no heating issues at all.

If the thermostat doesn't do it, pay for a good flush. If that still doesn't do it, get someone to pressure test the intercooler. A leaking intercooler will sometimes raise coolant temps, and the Dodge intercooler has a tendency of having the tanks crack and break away from the intercooler.

On my Dodge Ram 1500 (318), the radiator was the problem. My radiator shop said that a high percentage of the Dodge's he saw come in couldn't be rodded out, but needed new radiators. He showed it to me and it was bad. New radiator fixed my overheating problem. Previously I had changed thermostat, flushed radiator, new water pump (leaking), top and bottom hoses.

We have a 2005 2500 with the Cummins and it has not Heated on us yet and we put up over 30,000 Miles a year on it. Very Happy with the truck

I have an 01 and haven't had any problems with heat yet. Are you running a chip?

Said he was running biodiesel, could this be causing a problem?

No telling. I half scared of the stuff myself. I had thought about running a chip in mine for heavy loads, but I have heard of elevated turbocharger temps so I have stayed away from it for now.

It has nothing to do with the biodiesel. I can run striaght summer blend #2 with the same results.

No chip. Rad fins appear to be ok, and not excessively dirty. I'll check into the intercooler....but may just replace the radiator and be done with it. Dont like throwing nickels and dimes at em.

Don't be scared of the modest power gain chips, such as the Edge EZs and whatnot. An extra 60 ponies can be had with an increase of only 100F-150F on the pyro. When I still had the shop open, I had a little over a hundred hot shot drivers, all running modest chips. It helped fuel economy, especially in the mountains, improved drivability and at zero cost to reliability.

There is alot of misinformation floating around about power upgrades. Find an honest dealer, tell him what you do, and you'll be happier with your truck.

As far as the rad goes, that would be a first. I don't know about 318 rads, as the rad on a Cummins is a different beast all together, and I've never seen one that needed replacing. The other thing I forgot to mention was to check the intercooler boot clamps and the boots themselves. The clamps are famous for slowly letting up, and peridiocally need retightening. I kept a stock on hand of good quality clamps, and always replaced the junk that Dodge put on the truck. The boots themselves are pretty tough, but if the truck has seen some salt and snow, the bottom boots may be giving you some trouble.

If I think of anything else, I'll post it.

Thanks I'll look into it again.

Cornstalk: Are you loosing any of your cooliant? If so you might want to check on the thread, 1 Ton Dodge. You might have the dreaded 53 block. with the crack.

Cal:

No not losing coolant, I made sure the truck didnt have the "53" before I bought it.

I have checked the intercooler boots/clamps....didnt seem to be my problem either.

The truck really hasnt "overheated" on me yet...just pushes the line when under heavy load on a hot summer day.

Thanks.
