    Starting Out

225cattle, how much experience with cattle do you have personally, other than seeing them in the pasture? I started with bred cows when I started not knowing a darn thing about pretty much anything. Not even knowing it I was buying one and done cows at the sale barn, most stayed here for a...

    Arriving at Summer camp

I stand corrected. I thought feeding hay the way you do seemed to be pain in the a##. I've never been a fan of having to get in or out of a moving piece of equipment.

    Arriving at Summer camp

    In like a Lion

West central wi, 70's and 80's the last four days. started to rain yesterday and turned to snow overnight. Around 9 inches of snow on the ground and still falling as this is typed. Temp today around 40. Ground was getting nice and dried out before today.

    Branding

Thank you for the explanation. Nobody around me brands anything so it always made me wonder.

    Branding

It was mentioned on another thread about having lots of brands on a cow. Which leads to my question. Once the branding location heals, how do you know which is the most recent, or current owner?

    Afternoon affairs.

I see you feed quite a bit in circles, is this so they can benefit from each other as a wind block? Sorry for questioning, just never seen it done in my area. Very nice looking heifers as well.

    EPDs - Just Out

rocfarm, I don't understand your thinking on this one. One of your earlier posts said you were retaining heifers, why would you buy subpar bulls to make replacement heifers? I'm a small operator as well and while I don't spend 5k on a bull I still want one that does his job well. With the prices...

    Rearranging snowflakes.

Do you ever have problems with moose interacting with the cattle or is the cattle herd a little to intimidating with the large numbers? Always heard they were very territorial never gave it any thought before.

    Rearranging snowflakes.

You must have a heck of a spring in your step yet to clear that fence! I'd have to use the gate. :)

    Getting some snow

chevytahoe674, have you tried a skid steer mounted snow blower before? In my head it would work better than a bucket to get through that much snow. I can't imagine that much snow in one system, has got to make everything a pain in the butt.

    Pen Rider

Always interesting to you how other areas work there cattle. Around here you never hear of hardly anyone doing any darting.
  19. U

    Pen Rider

Sounds like you have plenty to keep you busy. How do you go about treating them, dart gun or are you roping them to treat?

    Changing Direction

Do you have anyone that can help you get your feet wet doing this? I have a hunch you can loose just as much money just as fast with certain groups of stockers as what you were loosing already.
