    Changing Direction

Nothing wrong with being flexible, we've went from stockers to cow/calf , to hay production, and back again, a couple of times. Buy calves off the farm, from your neighbor, give him avg price, weigh the load. Your gonna get the "my calves bring top dollar" conversation. The math works when you...

    Need affirmation

When we backgrounded, I brought home a steer, swear they switched his tag, but probably not. The wife said what"d you buy him for? He ate everything, and gained more per day than any in the group, made me bucks, dang he WAS ugly.

    Culling

I will try to get pics today, but I've decided to keep her, she'll fit right in with a group of heifers fhat I bought a while back for a fall breeding group. The neighbors bull bred her a couple months early but she grew well, and the vet thought she would have easily had it if not for the...

    Culling

Do you consider a malpresentation a reason to cull a first calf heifer? Had one today, and I know she only has 1 job. The calf died before I could get it out. I try to take a hard line, but I just can't bring myself to do it. Your thoughts.

    When to put out hay

Just bought some heavy 4x5 for 35 w/10 mile haul, more insurance than anything, netwrapped so It will store outside better than my string bales. Still have some 10$ stuff from last year that I'll pit out for bedding, they pick through it, but its not much. Got a load of noodles coming next week.

    Cattle Expansion Funding

MEH, taking your grandkids fishing is worth more than any herd of cows. Sunup to sundown, and every weekend is just not appealing to me anymore.

    Crossing Cattle

All good advice, get some working corral facilities in place, before you need them.

    Poor feeder design

Ours get all the way in , then get their fat butts hung, on the way out. Feeder turned over, calf pinned, had to cut 2 out the last 2 yrs. Gone to plastic, at least easier to cut with a hackxaw.

    Breeding heifers

To each his own, we generally try to keep our replacements, but with an almost 100% bull crop, this year we bought some, and yes from the sale barn. 1.30$

    Startup farm

I would go the weaned and vaxxed steer route I believe 6 to 10 head. Do you have any equipment? You'll at least need access to a tractor and brushhog, at the minimum. Reach out to your neighbors, most are willing to help, if you can help them, do it. Fences, facilities.

    aggressive mommas

Sounds to me like you're interfering, when you dont have to, a "couple of hours", leave em be, and let them do their job. It works in the human world too, sometimes we need assistance and as you discovered momma was gratefull.
