    4 week old calf....sick...abruptly.

His appetite was back on Friday evening...and by Saturday morning...he was back to his normal self. I haven't been able to secure another calf to put on the cow...but I'm hoping to be able to get one this week.

    4 week old calf....sick...abruptly.

I was going to put a second calf on her....but initially, she wasn't producing enough milk for two. So I thought I would just keep her inputs lower...and have her just nurse the one calf...rather than pushing her harder to raise multiple calves. But now, perhaps I should revisit that.

    4 week old calf....sick...abruptly.

A Hobby Guy Here.....I've got a four week old bull calf named Bandit (75% Holstein 25% angus). His dam is a Holstein/Angus cross (First Calf Heifer). I put Bandit on his dam twice a day for nursing. Up to this point, he's been doing great. He's been taking all of her milk...growing like a...

    select sire bulls for heifers

The original poster is looking just at Select Sires bulls. Tough to argue with LCC New Standard's combo of Calving Ease & Low Birth Weight with outstanding Weaning and Yearling Weights. Looks like his only blemish is his Cow Energy Index (bottom 15% of the breed). 7AN320 - Prophet might be...

    select sire bulls for heifers

Another one to consider would be 7AN297 - Insight. He's at least breed average in all his $ Indexes...including top 1% in $W. If you are willing to accept some risk, 7AN352 - Combination has some great numbers, but his accuracy is low. I have used 7AN355 - RAB-MR Future Direction 3407N on...

    select sire bulls for heifers

I don't like using bulls with a bw epd of less than 0 Just out of curiosity...why? I'm a greenhorn, but it seems to me that negative BW would be a good thing...provided that the bull still has solid WW and YW EPDs.

Transitioning from Dairy to Beef in Wisconsin.

Thanks, ABrauny....yup, I realize that starting with Holsteins isn't ideal....but I want to be able to trace at least part of my herd back to my parents herd. Once I get settled in a bit, maybe I'll be able to add in some dairy-less stock as well.

This will be a smaller operation...I'll be looking to use A.I. for all breeding. I've got a close friend who is the local Select Sires tech. I am leaning towards a 4-breed rotation, because I want the hybrid vigor that comes from breeding an animal that is predominatly British to a...

Transitioning from Dairy to Beef in Wisconsin.

If I want to eventually settle into a 3 or 4 breed rotational crossbreeding system....would there be any advantage to breeding to the same beef breed for a few generations, before doing any additional cross-breeding? Breed all angus for a few generations, before crossing with anything else...

Transitioning from Dairy to Beef in Wisconsin.

Been thinking about the possibility of keeping 1 or two of the holsteins around as a source of milk for the calves. So, do I try to get the milking system back up and running, or try to have the calves nurse off 1 or 2 of the cows? I've been searching the forum, and it seems that there are...

Galloway2...I see what you mean now about the different types of Galloway. I noticed from your website that you cross some with Angus....have you done any cross-breeding with any of the Continental Breeds? You don't happen to have any pictures of any Holstein/Galloway crosses, do you? I...

Sounds interesting....I guess I didn't consider Galloway mostly because I was looking at the Breeds that are available via A.I. Galloway semen doesn't seem to be too widely available. I'm sure my daughter would be all for an "Oreo" calf :-)

Transitioning from Dairy to Beef in Wisconsin.

I am thinking Angus for the first cross, because of the slightly lower (on average) birth weights for Angus. But now after doing some google searches...the Birth Weight for Angus appears to be pretty similar to Hereford. I guess my perception was driven by one time, helping my parents to...

Transitioning from Dairy to Beef in Wisconsin.

My parents milked a small (~20) herd of holsteins for 50 years, before retiring last summer. They sold the milking cows to another farmer, and sold the farm to me. My dad still has some heifers and steers on the farm, and I've been getting more and more involved with helping out with them...
