can she be bred to a bull?

Ohiobeef I guess she is the right size if her moms 1700 lbs if you figure 65% mature weight at 14 months. In my hereford world of 1200-1300lb cows she's enormous.

can she be bred to a bull?

If she is that big at 14 months she needs a diet ASAP. Then get her bred. That big she has gotta be on full feed and if that is the case she will have problems calving or even getting bred. Either way she is plenty big enough but she should be cycling already.

Newbie! Questions... Please don't shoot me!

Welcome from one yankee to another. I would skip the milking gonna be to much of a hassle. Seems fun at first but loses speed quickly. Horse and cattle should be kept separate especially when you are only gonna have a handful if that. If you had big acreage that would be a different story...

Can a 2 month old calf get joint ill?

Could be a relapse if it had it when it was first born before you got it. Check her temp and see if its high. If its over 102.5-103 she will need banamine. No temp maybe an injury of some sort. I am by no means an expert but dealt with a case of joint ill this year with a relapse.

    Getting a loan

Farm credit makes you jump through hoops on fire while your covered in gas. Now thats farm credit east. Took me 8 months to get my farm loan. I could have bought a normal house for twice as much in two weeks with my credit and income. There is only two companies in jersey that will finance...

What to use as walking surface and build up?

I wouldnt use clean stone. It wont pack as good as even modified stone which will have fines and smaller stone pieces mixed in with the 3/4.

What to use as walking surface and build up?

Recycled or crushed concrete. Packs great and is cheap. Screenings will work but will need to be maintained better than crushed concrete.

    Pregnancy issue with a heifer

He said a bull was in for the past 30 days. You could tell that. I wasnt talking about the stage if she was bred previously.

    Pregnancy issue with a heifer

The rate of hormones in the blood I believe would tell you if she was just bred or not. I know the rate or whatever the number stands for is always on the low side compared to a cow that was bred for say two months instead of a month. Had two I purchased calve at 16 months old. Both lived but...

    Sick cattle

Not to hijack the thread but I have my first case of pneumonia I believe in a 65 day old calf. He was fine got a high temp, shallow breathing, fast heart rate, and lungs sound like it. Gave banamine to drop fever and nuflor. had to give banamine for past three days and second shot of nuflor...

please help us in the survey of our course project

Survey can't be real. I mean even a college kid that has never seen a farm can ask better questions than that. How many guys are over 10,000 head in the country? Who wants to know pulse/heart rate/blood pressure? If theres no heartbeat they are dead end of story. The questions about checking...

cattle ownership: personal property vs. business assets

On my end I consider it a business and file a schedule C on my taxes for the farm. My concrete business is an LLC but the farm is not. I probably should since its easy to do and only costs like 100 bucks. When 30-40 grand get spent I consider that business and not a hobby of say a few...

    bottle feeding newborn question

I use cow colostrum for calves, goats, sheep or whatever needs it. You can freeze it in an ice tray for smaller animals and put it in a freezer bag after its frozen or water bottles for calves. Always take some off easy cows that just need some feed to stay still. You never know when you will...

Am I lacking anything supplement wise for heifers?

Look I was in your same shoes a few years ago when I started. You will get very good info, very bad info, the guys that just like to start trouble, and the guys that will have something negative to say no matter what on this board. You will learn who they are and take it with the grain of sand...
