    Ya'll Be Careful!

I get a little too complacent even with dairy cattle. So used to them being predictable, but now and than they can turn into holy terrors. Had one come right at me, defying total logic. She is a little Jersey/X, a little TOO little for a holstein parlor. I had about 2 seconds to think on...

    Docking dairy cows tails

Used to be all cows were docked where I work, and the parlor is an all exit herringbone. Now they're getting more relaxed about it. Tail, no tail, really doesn't make a difference to me as long as the switch is kept cut short.

    Docking dairy cows tails

To keep the cows cleaner and the tails out of our faces, Alan. :)

How dumb do you like your cows?

There's only one cow out of the over 560 I work with that lays backwards in the freestall. She's did it from her first lactation, must be on her third now, so obviously she won't ever change. I don't have to guess which pen she's in...I can tell by the filthy freestall. Heifers lay in...

How dumb do you like your cows?

Dumb in dairy cattle is based on these criteria in my opinion: :) 1. Won't lick the calf off at birth. (What's that syndrome?) 2. Doesn't catch on that moving forward with the crowd gate prevents it from running up on her legs. 3. Stands in the entrance to the parlor but refuses to go...

My Holstein thinks she is a dog

There's a cow at work that I have a love/hate relationship because of her doglike behavior. She was bought in February, but never really adjusted to life in the "general population" because of stiff knees. At one point recently she was with a group of cows that were outside, but had to be...

    Fresh Milk

I grew up drinking bulk tank milk, and still do occasionally from my boss' tank. Granted this is filtered and ran through a cooler before I ever take it, but I think it tastes far better than even A and D from the store.

    Cow is Down

Gorgeous calf! :) Dairy cattle it's a given to IV for milk fever, even if she isn't down, and most of us can do it on our own w/o a vet's orders. Beef are obviously a totally different field.

    Cow is Down

Are her ears warm? Milk fever (or ketosis) generally bring on cold extremeties, and the ears are a great thing to check.

    Problem with udder

Don't know anything about beef breeds, but with acute mastitis dairy breeds will run a temp along with abnormal looking milk. Dairy cattle we administer IMM treatment along with IM Banamine and Polyflex.

    Calf Coat/warmer

Work for a custom calf raiser, and she's dependent on the coats. Uses the brand "Woolover".

    day light and dairy cows

There is only one shift that turns off lights where I work...mine, 3rd. Amounts to them being off for about 1 1/2 hours before 1st shift comes. They just started turning them off mid summer. Theory the son gave me was the cows needed rest time, but I tend to think it was more the electric...

    False heats..??

Herd manager calls them follicular heats. We use all AI, so not sure about the bull. But I've seen pregnant cows in standing heats repeatedly.

    Steel Toed Footware

Dave...I realize you beef folks have that clearance most of the time. I do not have the space, nor the natural fear and respect that you guys tend to take for granted. Dairy cattle are notorious for being stupid. I know of a gal that works in sandles. Not only is it highly unsanitary, she's...

    Steel Toed Footware

I also wear steel toed boots to work in. Brands differ, but I feel just a bit safer moving 100 cows a shot since I have my toes protected. :)

    heat detectors

Kamars for heifers, old fashioned paint sticks for the rest.

What Injuries Have You Sustained from Cattle?

Yep, it was by a couple of the ones that were whining about having to produce strawberry and chocolate milk. :P

What Injuries Have You Sustained from Cattle?

Dairy cattle...of course... Stepped on feet and hands (in a parlor), pinned from the knees down by cattle in return alleys, and kicked repeatedly everywhere from my shins to my collar bone.

Useful skills anyone dealing with cattle should have?

That was my first thought. :) I'm amazed with dairy cattle how many people are clueless as to how these animals think and move.

    Starting out

Is northern MN flatter than I'm picturing? Thought it was highly wooded up that way. Never have liked the temps I see in Grand Marais and Ely, which is about 10 degrees colder than I have here in northwestern WI.
