How do I cope with Butchering..???

My grandmother lived her whole life on a farm and never ate one piece of beef they grew on their place. Nothing says you have to if you don't want. Trade the cow for someone else's and eat that one. Kind of the old "it's no one you know" thing. Regardless of how you approach it, it's a cow. Not...

    What to charge my dad

This post is simply amazing to me. What would I charge my father? NOTHING! I'd pay anything to be able to help him, talk to him, see him one more time.

    hold em or fold em?

We had a good hay year? Not where I am. You'd better have a supply of hay already or a pile of money if your keeping them through the winter. Hay here is going to be in short supply again and what I've seen it's going up fast. We just didn't get any rain for the last part of the season. The...

Need help on disposal of a old cow

Around here there's a rendering truck that will haul them off. Costs $60. I wish it was the $20 Dun was talking about. I've seen lots drug back into ditches and left. Or if you want to go to an extreme you might check this out. I found it bizzare and interesting...

    Black Herefords vs Black Angus

Seems to me the intent of the "black hereford" association is to drum up a market for these over glorified commercial cattle and get someone to pay a premium price for the bulls they produce. The only thing I can say to that is, PT Barnum was right. :D

Profit from cattle?? Where is it?

The first step to learning is admitting you don't know. I haven't seen too many know it all's learn a single thing.

    Squeeze Chute

I have a preifert and have been very happy with it. I'd think carefully about the powder river value chutes. Here's the line of concern from their website. That was enough to scare me off when I bought mine.

why background /vac/ or wean em at all...just load em??

The sale barn I use doesn't ask anything expect for name and address either. However they write down everything important about the animals I tell them. If they are vaccinated it's written down, if they are bunk broke it's written down. I generally don't attend the auction but have watched it on...

    post holes

Like Dun said, depends on the ground. I've got an area on my place the if you tried to drive post with hydraulics, all you'd end up with is a bunch of t posts that look like pretzels. I have to drive by hand, moving around to find a place between the rocks big enough for the post to go in...

    Agriculture and Idiots

I have been around and lived in enough places to understand more than just the lifestyle of those in agriculture. I also understand that most people in the cattle world are viewed as poorly educated heathens that lack skills viewed as basic in society. I know that many people in agriculture...

    neighbor's cows

Call the county sheriff. If they are out in what the sheriff feels is an excessive amount or he feels like the owner hasn't made a reasonable effort to contain them, he will write them a ticket. One of the guys I work with had goats that kept escaping, the sheriff put a note on his door saying...

Wish we could get some rain, feeding hay already. About time to think about culling.

    cattle rubs

I tried to find a good picture of a tip tank, but only found a poor picture here.http://www.beavervalleysupply.com/sectionj/sumfeed.htm Look at the fly face unit. The tank is not shown, just the mop. The tank goes thru the mop at the top where the bar attaches it to the feeder. When the cattle...

    cattle rubs

I've just about given up on the sock type rubs and have gone to tip tanks. Put them on the mineral feeders this spring. So far they have worked great. I rarely see a face fly. Always an abundance of charge as long as the tank doesn't go dry. I'll probably replace the back rubs with them soon...

Lots of clover in pasture this year. Is this a good thing?

As I'm sure your aware, but I'll say in case of the possiblity some might not be: Inoculants do much more than protect the seed or plant. They infect the legume and form nodules in the root system. It forms a symbiotic relationship that is beneficial to the soil and the host plant. It's where...

If you have none, you need to inoculate the seed before planting.

    Wt. gain on stockers.??

Unless I personally knew and trusted the person I was buying them from and he told me what vaccinations they had, I would treat them like they had not had any. What people's opinions constitutes a full set of vaccinations vary too much. For instance my grandfather raised cattle his whole life...

    Wt. gain on stockers.??

Sorry, Bad plan. Vaccinations are cheap insurance against losing the whole lot or costing you more in vet bills that you could possibly make. This is one place in my opinion you don't want to cut costs.

    Wt. gain on stockers.??

The amount of land you'll need varies greatly depending on where you are. You need to check with someone in your area about stocking rates. Don't know about your state, but here the County Extension Services people will answer most any question you have. If you don't have them, talk to a local...
