    Keep water from freezing??

I have seen where you take a black stock tank, cut a good sized square out of it and replace with a piece of plexiglass (sealing it well obviously). Face tank to south so it picks up maximum sun exposure and "stores" heat in the water. Insulate sides and back. Have also seen where you half bury...

    Pens with guard rail

This! At my FIL farm, his daddy put guard rail up for alley way leading to the chute over 40 years ago. Still standing today. I replaced a few switch ties 3 years ago because they were rotted. His dad's cattle were pretty rank back in the day so I been told. FILs cattle are very mild.

    Angus for beef

I like to butcher mine at about 16 to 19 months. I don't push them real hard to start. I just let them grow(quality hay and a light amount of grain) without pushing for finish too early. If it was a Feb or Mar calf this year, you should easily have it ready to go by Sept or Oct next year. You...

Wish I had more crabgrass. The cows flat devour it.

What kind of issues do you deal with in your area?

Well, i feel pretty good after reading this... all I have trouble with is the occasional warm Coors light, not enough time for fishing, and the random stray cat!

    Can't catch a break

Yes. She was actually nursing on her Jeanne. Latched and sucking.

    Can't catch a break

Great recommendation RBB. I have a question for you. I have never had a cow or even a yearling do this. Watching tonight, i caught a weaned yearling hereford sucking on another hereford cow(not her dam either). Do they never grow out of this? If i load her up and take her home for the rest of...

docility of the bull causing his calves to not be aggresive nursers

Homerun right here. We started supplementing with Selenium (home is in selenium deficient soil) and the calf crop this year is the most active, aggressive pursuers of udder we have ever had. Remarkable difference.

    Heifer/Bull ratios

Half way done today. Sitting 50/50 so far. Wouldn't bother me if the rest were bull calfs.

    Iced over cattle

Just got in from shoveling out the feed bunks and putting some grain out. Cows have a nice snow/ice coat. Feels like -3 with 10 mph winds out of the NW. Looks like winter is finally arriving here.

    Cattle Prod

Only time I ever need a hotshot is unloading at the butcher. Have had a few times where the steers would absolutely NOT come off the trailer for love nor money. Canes, rattle paddle, even getting up in there and cranking tails. Had to hit 1 or 2 with the fire stick. Never had a dark cutter, but...

+1. I keep basic repair parts on hand just in case. Haven't used any yet. Been in 3 winters now.
