    From dairy to beef

I haven't followed the dairy side for awhile but it used to be that dairy cows were worth $300-400 more than beef cows. If this is still true I would recommend selling your more valuable dairy cows and buying straight beef cattle.

    Major birthing trouble

Restrain her then get a arm in there and see what is going on. Most likely the calf is out of position and must be shifted around. By now the calf is probably lost but it is possible to save the cow. In moving the feet it is important to not puncture the calf bed which would cause the cow to...

What are the downsides to fall calving?

Nesikep your weather is a little colder but very similar to ours. And what I do isn't necessarily workable for my own neighbors. I had a dairy for many years and still have machinery and equipment that most people don't have access to. Also I am trying to market hay and crops through the cows...

What are the downsides to fall calving?

I have had a fall calving herd for about ten years in western SD. We calve mid August through September. A friend once told me it wasn't a sin to check cows in a air conditioned cab. We have little calving trouble having only pulled two calves in the last ten years on a 100 cow herd. Are land...

    Loaning out a bull???

A friend and I shared Bulls for awhile. It worked good for us as I needed Bulls in Late fall and he needed them in the summer. We each kept them six months. Both had closed herds. We had different breeds so we had cross Breda to sell and we're stil able to maintain enough straight needs for...

    Cow nursing two calves

In my operation the calves are all about the same age and kept in small pastures. Milk theives are comman. Four years ago I had a three year old with a good steer calf. The three year old died suddenly. When I weaned you couldn't pick her calf out from the others. I have never had a problem...

    Who winters without hay?

I think any feeding program must be measured against some basic standards. Are the cows milking to provide adequate growth for your calves. What percent of the cows are open at prey check. Are other health issues that may be nutritional a problem. This has been a dry summer here. Semi loads of...

    Honest input cost variables

I live in the "north" I guess. I have watched Atlas and other storms wipe out different operations. You speak of doing other work. Being a manager is my most important work. As atlas approached weather forecasts were for a very bad storm. I moved the cattle to my best shelter and put out feed. I...

First Try-Out of Bud Box and Squeeze Chute

I get my cattle in with feed to. My first question to those who help me is,"what could be changed to make it work smoother?" We have a fairly decent system now but I am always game for better ideas to make it easier on man and beast.

How to know if your mama cow is milking calf good

Is the calf spend to much time trying to nurse or does it nurse and go lay down? Looks like a good enough cow from the pics. Breeders of all breeds have selected for sound snug udders like she appears to have.

    Heat...Black...In the Shade

I think the biggest heat problem for black cattle is in the feedlot.

RAISING BEEF CATTLE ON A FEW ACRES

I think you folks need to study the dairy industry on this subject. I spent over thirty years with a total confinement herd. Management and management problems increase the more dense the population. Things such as disease and hoof problems require much more attention. It is hard to put a value...

    Feeder Cattle

Your asking us to use are crystal ball....lol. The cattle cycle probably hit its peek last fall. Buyers who bought calves last fall probably gave a winters feed away. There will be small upturns but the general trend is probably down. Pork and poultry will increase a lot to force this. We need...

    strangers among the cattle

I do expect people to stop so they can find out what gates are closed where the cows are etc. but I do encourage young people to fish and hunt and appreciate the land. My family and neighbors allowed me to grow up in a wonderful world and I like to encourage young people to do the same. So much...

    Curtiss Beef Bull Books

I was trained by Curtis breeding Service and was a rep for several years. They had the first simmental semantic available in the US. The first bull was named Parisien followed soon by a bull named Sultan I had several good calves in my herd by both of them. I have worked for other studs but...

    Water Trough question?

We're there fences leading there so each pasture shared a comman tank in the center?

Running water line in drain line

I have used a gravity system for many years. The one thing I would suggest is to use over sized lines in absense of pressurized water. A four to six inch drain for sure. I haven't had to deal with I adjust slope but your idea sounds solid. Keeping moving water will keep it thawed out.
