    New Bull

if he's a pure yterminbal sire you should be able to use him till he isn't capable physically of doing his job.some people aren't as fussy soundness wise picking a terminal bull because they don't retain heifers but you can also lose a couple seasons of use.

Would you buy a bull from a breeder who......

Knersie why not buy that bull back and just use him A'I-if he can pass the A'I stud health tests he should be alright health wise. I'm a commercial breeder but I've owner a share in quite a few bulls with purebred guys-never had an insurmountable problem yet.

    Funnel Butts

Pretty hard to keep heifers away from bulls when your trying to get her momma bred lol. I bought the champion pen of three heifers calves at a local fall show and everyone of them had a pup in her-they calved at 14 months old so probably got bred right at end of the guys breeding season.

    Funnel Butts

Frail doesn't necessary mean fertile. One of the biggest troubles Simmental breeders have up here is heifer calves getting bred while on their mothers. There's a few that routinely give a shot of Lutalyse at weaning to abort the child brides. That's a Fleckvieh simmental bull quite a bit...

AltaBeef post a pic of your steers when they come off grass-we'll see how sick and malnourished he looks then lol. I think he looks just about right to go to grass with myself.

    Doesn't Look Good

I haven't spent a cent on fertilizer in probably 15 years-we've been doing most of what Bez says for a long time. Some call that HRM management I just was cheap before it became trendy-my vet just shakes his head when I rifle problems but he has a standing offer to come get them for free if he...

    Profit & Cow Cost

Lucky that the big three are areas that you can reduce if you manage things right. One thing BSE did up north it taught you how to pare costs to the bone overnight.

    Canadian Thissle....Step back Non-Believers

Canada thistle is a big problem in our peat pastures-it usually gets started in an old ground fire spot and then spreads. Total rest-entire season-really sets it back as the grass will compete. I found out that by accident when we couldn't use one pasture for a year due to the dugouts drying up...

    Stampede

It's happened at our place a couple times over the years and a few hundred calves running blind can wreck a fair amount of stuff. You don't know what really sets them off but it does happen.

    Aggressive young bull

Get a dog to pet and can that sucker before he camps on you. Holstein bulls kill more people than bears every year in North America-once they hit puberty they are bad dudes.

When would you let her ride?

It's amazing how many 'troubles' disappear if you let cows out to calve on pasture. Cows have been doing an admirable job of being cows for thousands of years it's just in the last 50 or so we decided to shut them up and make life difficult for them.
