    Buying bulls

@CowboyRam if you don’t mind a little road trip you can buy a new Angus bull on March 25th, I happen to know that @GoWyo is having his sale that day.

    Sell out prices

I've read somewhere that the average age of a farmer/rancher in the USA is in the 70s, unless you have a younger family member to pass it on to that wants to do the work then the farm or ranch will likely die off with the owner. It's a very capital-intensive business with poor cash flow and...

    EPDs - Just Out

He also doesn’t have time for AI but has time to post close to 400 messages since July. Some people can’t be helped…

    EPDs - Just Out

If you’re starting off with junk and are intent on transform it into something better why don’t you use AI rather than a subpar bull. A sorry bull on junk cows isn’t going to transform much of anything. junk cows x subpar bull = subpar junk calves

Good weight to harvest a steer?

You need to be feeding it more, the target weight you need to be trying for is in the 1200-1400 lb range

    Graining One

@MurraysMutts I had one cow like that, and they only get worse with age, she got to where the toes completely crossed over and she didn't get around very well. I took her to get trimmed up and then sold her not long after.

    Tenderness Gene??

Tenderness is an important quality for the consumer that you can't determine by looks, in this case we need the paperwork to make an informed breeding decision. All other things being equal I will choose the sire with better tenderness numbers.

    Tenderness Gene??

@Lucky_P as mentioned before by @simme the accuracy may be low for this trait but even a score of 30 isn't bad. My Inherit Select results give me a tenderness score but no percent ranking, it's the only trait that they don't give a ranking for. Hopefully over the years they have gotten better...

    Tenderness Gene??

@Lucky_P this link is very helpful, the tenderness genomic score shows the ranking within the database. A lower number indicates a better ranking, meaning more tender. Take GB Fireball 672 for example he is top 1% for marbling but 98% for tenderness, indicating a well marbled but tough steak...

    Tenderness Gene??

I know this is an older thread but it’s the most recent one on this topic that I found. I know many of the DNA tests have a score for tenderness that are supposed to correlate to the Warner-Bratzler shear force test, with negative numbers being more tender. My Zoetis Inherit Select tests that...

    Calving season is underway

It’s always amazing to me how difficult it is to find one when you’re looking for it. A small depression in the ground or a little clump of weeds is all that is needed to give them a hiding place.

Limp that might be a sprain?

You should review this foot scoring guide. https://www.angus.org/performance/Documents/footscorebrochure.pdf Based solely on the picture posted I would say it’s an 8 for hoof angle. Marginally unsound His limp might improve if he can take it easy but not while he’s romancing the ladies.

    ANOTHER comment about color

I'm with @daneg, the cow has a black nose and black hooves, she has the black gene in her genetics.

Bull hip height and frame score.

Raven Powerball is a 5-frame bull with a mature weight in excess of 2500 lbs. He isn't tall but he is deep and thickly made. I would be happy with one like this. https://absbullsearch.absglobal.com/details/bull/29AN2103/B/USA/ANGUS/EN/USA/

Bull hip height and frame score.

I find frame score to be a poor evaluation method for a bull. It says nothing about length, width or depth, it might mean more if it also came with a measurement from the ground to the belly because then you could determine the depth of the body. The difference between bulls with frame scores...

    Landowner problems when leasing

If you are going to be participating in any government programs such as LFP, the FSA office requires a written lease.

Bull hip height and frame score.

The table is adjusted for age, I would say both are 5 or close to it. This table is from the Angus.org website

Keeping a calf as a bull

Yes, if you have a closely related mating, like a father to a daughter, or a son to his mother, half-brother to half-sister, etc. all of those offspring should go to slaughter. It isn't a preferred way to do things but sometimes it happens.

    Neighbor’s bulls

Boys will be boys! When he brought in the new bulls he upset the pecking order, the bulls are just establishing the new hierarchy for who is top stud.
