    Cow Troubles

Different problem. Fence out means you are responsible to fence cattle out of your property. And it means ADOT is responsible to fence cattle out of its right of way. Same with Union Pacific. Of course I will fix a hole if I see it, but I'm not buiding 3 or 4 miles of fence for the state. I...

    Cow Troubles

no, I don't think building 2 to 4 miles of fence in the rocks a few feet away from a fence that the state is supposed to maintain is a good use of my limited resources.

have him try the windshield wipers. may be too high on a bus but it works great in my car. way better than honking or flashing lights.

    Cow Troubles

the interstates are fenced by the state, I have 7-8 miles of interstate that run through the ranch. I have been told not to touch the fence, it is ADOT's responsibility. I am currently fighting with them about 3 mile of it that is more than 60 years old and badly needs replacing. I have lost 3...

    Cow Troubles

nope, not in Arizona except for a few very small declared areas. this is a fence out state, you are responsible to protect your own property and if you damage or kill a cow you are responsible for that too.

have they been sucked? is he with any calves that might be hunting more milk? or a herdmate that got weaned too early?

    Drought

what kind of hay? I would think a bull should get half to nearly a whole 50 lb bale per day.

agree on horses, not necessarily on cattle.

Best Cattle Crosses For Unassisted Calving

proven cows and normal bulls. or start with heifers and longhorn/corriente bull(s) for first calves. then better bull. I have rarely seen calving problems with braford cows, though not zero.

    Ticks?

strange this thread happening now. we branded a bunch on Saturday and several were pretty loaded up on small to medium sized ticks. I have never seen them this time of year, and it is dry to boot. we do have more standing dry feed than has been normal for a lot of years but usually ticks are...

    Ticks?

Guineas are supposed to be the best for ticks, but they seem kind of stupid, and they are noisy as hell. I tried them a few times but coyotes get them as fast if not faster than they take chickens. no they won't follow far away from headquarters but will keep ticks down around that area. they...

    paintball marking gun

been thinking about this for ages and may have even asked long ago but anybody use a paintball gun to mark animals? we have too many solid blacks and reds these days. a few are of a different brand than the ranch brand. takes me a while to pair things when they are penned but when working and...

    Ethanol corn question

love that song Grampa told of going down to Douglas to see if they could see Pancho Villa or General Pershing as a kid around 12 or 13, he and his buddies got stopped by some kind of security and asked what they were doing and one of them said they were just on their way home over yonder. the...

    Crippled cows

had a bottle baby that somehow broke front shoulder/elbow or possibly was shot? we never could tell. this was after she was grown. she never put wieght on that leg again, but she got around pretty dang good. it would be shocking to find her up in the rocks on the mountain or miles from the...

    Calves newly weaned weight gain

allelopathy? when a plant prevents other plants from growing near it usually through some kind of chemical. does alfalfa do that? for years "experts" claimed mesquite, whitethorn, creosote etc did this. on a fun field trip where apparently nobody told the plants, we found plenty of grasses...

    crossbred bull question

our first highlander was pretty gentle, but all of her heifer calves were a little nuts and when one had a char calf he was really crazy. another crazy but nice looking cross was highlander - brahma. good mama cow there but extreme caution needed.

    crossbred bull question

my take is a little different. first, do you have the facilities to keep a bull? 5 head isn't really where I would be looking to invest in one full time. wait until you have 20-25 cows. next, while a charxhighlander is a heck of a nice animal to sell, the potential for some goofy behavior...
