    Working dogs

I have border collies and find them a vital part of my operation. Lynn Daniels of Atoka Oklahoma has great animals. Two things about cattle and dogs. The cows learn from the dogs and then they make the dog better. You will not "train" a border collie they are bred to do what they do and they...

    Today's workshop

I FEEL that the prices will drop. We are at this level because of a perfect storm that changed a lot of agriculture in our area. Missouri had a drought that caused a significant drop in cow calf pairs, Texas drought was devastating for many of those folks. Now California is struggling. At...

    Make a living off Cows

stay in teaching until you qualify for retirement then retire to the farm and enjoy. The addition income will make life easy. I teach chemistry and coach baseball. My goal is to retire to that life style but when I am eligible to retire we will have two kids in college so I will likely have to...

    Just curious -- How many veterinarians . . .

I have to give kudos to our vets. My daughter had a heifer calf that got with the bull too soon and ended up being a mess. I was in constant consultation with the jr partner and even brought the heifer in with another bunch for a free examination. I was very greatful. The sr partner and his...

    Opinions on some heifers

1,2,4 are nice! I would keep number 3 but wouldn't get especially attached to her and if she didn't do an excellent job as a momma away she goes. I don't like the 5th one.

    miracle-twin-yes!!!!!!

We had twins from one of our registered cows. I missed her in heat but our Hereford didn't. I saw him breed her and on a whim I turned in our Angus bull hoping that the angus might breed her and at least have a chance at purebred. Lo and behold she had twins one from each bull! Both are...

    interesting article about castration age

for our spring born calves we like to castrate at 2 months. We usually get them in for fly control and worming/setting up ET on the mommas. We also use that opportunity to give pinkeye shot and implant those not being considered for breeding.

    Worst weaning ever.

To explain a little more, the forty acres was lost due to overgrazing of the grass. We didn't lose a lease so that put pressure on me to try to retain the cows so that I would have them when we got the grass back in shape. Dun was right in that we did have way too many cows for the remaining...

    Worst weaning ever.

Just finished weaning our fall calves. We only averaged 350 lbs. Usually our weaning average is 200+ lbs better! We have approached 600 lb weaning average before with some calves as big as 800 lbs. This year our BIGGEST did not top 500! Our spring average this year was 575. There are a...

    Large vs. Small Round Bales

If your buying a bailer get a 5x6. You can make any size bale you want ?x6 When I custom bale I bale a 66" bale for most customers. That make roughly a 1200lb bale. When I bale for myself because I have a 14 mile trip I set the monitor to signal at 70" that gives me a little to smooth out...

    Define F-1

In genetics Ryder is correct. The F1 does not need to be a crossbreed. the F1 generation is the offspring of PURE breeding parents. So technically all purebred cattle at one time were F1's and then became the parent generation. In the cattle biness F1 are the offspring of breeding two...

    Accounting methods

I discussed the accrual method with my banker and he was against using this method for farming. Mainly because of inventory values are very hard to get right. gm

    is castration worth the trouble?

I think What was trying to say that an implant costs $0.86? I checked with valley vet and the cost is $1.35. We implant twice, one at a month and then another at weaning. I don't consider it a cost because it returns $$$ in extra weight but it is an expense.

    alley gates

I was reading some info from Oklahoma state and they suggested 20' between gates. That should be enough space for 3-4 cows.

    Curiosity about reliable cows

About 1/2 our herd is 7 yrs or better. In the last two years I have been culling the '94 models. We still have some left. Structurally most have done very well. Only one slipped a calf in her latter years due to a lame foot. We got the foot cured and she bred back so I took the opportunity...
