    Signs

While you guys are talking about signs, have you ever noticed that on certain moon phases you can dig a post hole and won't have enough dirt to fill the hole back up. And that's with the post in the hole too. I don't know what phase of the moon it is. When I was a kid, I use to think my dad...

    Tractor / hay equip

Don't know if someone already mentioned this or not, kinda skimmed the posts, but the biggest plus that I can see from baling our own hay is that we get one more cutting of hay per year. Over the years we used two different guys to bale our hay and they always came about two weeks after we...

    Loose Minerals

Several different good types. Depends on where you are, and what your area is deficient in. For example, our area is copper deficient, and we use a mineral that has extra copper in it. Also, find a mineral that the cows will freely eat. We have tried several types that the cows wouldn't...

    Need Help!

The land leasing is a good option. Especially if you can get a signed lease/purchase agreement. Not sure if it's the same in every state, but if you get a l/p agreement in AL, then you have the legal, right of first refusal if the landowner ever sells the land.

    water for sale

We got 7 inches of rain in two days last week. Supposed to get several more tomorrow and Wed. Guess it's a good thing we live on a mountain. Not too good when digging fence post holes, but nice when all the water runs off.

    Duck Weed

2-4D Amine will kill it, and it's labled for aquatic use, just mix in plenty of surfactant. (make sure the surfactant is labeled for aquatic use) Round up will work, but the surfactant in Round-up can be toxic to fish. Duckweed looks like a very tiny 4 leaf clover with a small...

    Friendly bull

I learned my lesson the hard way as a 10 year old kid. That was the year my dad bought his first two cows, and a friend of his gave him a baby bull calf who's momma had died. We raised the calf on a bottle, fed and petted him everyday. One day while out in the pasture the friendly bull, now...

    Another question about protein

Our state extension agency offers a Master Cattlemans course, and he was told that during the training by one of the "teachers." Now, I haven't taken the course, so I don't know if it's a... this is a cow, this is a bull.... type of thing, or if it is really a beneficial course. I think it...

    Another question about protein

I was told recently that cows can only utilize, at the most about 10% protein and everything over and above that goes straight out the tail pipe. It was also explained to me at the same time that the push for the extra protein was one very successful marketing ploy in the cattle business...

Oh, It's WAR EAGLE for me for sure.

    Calf wandering

That's about when they moved in over here in Northeast AL. Wish they'd move back to where they came from. We really don't have many problems at all with them. Only lost one calf that I can remember, but I still don't like them being around. They do get the cows all stirred up.

    Was the calf ok?

    Calf wandering

I have one cow that hides her calf. I really like to see them keep them close by. When I see one seperated like that, I drive over where the calf is and bleat like a calf in distress. The momma always comes running like the wind. I figure if the momma stays close then the calf is safer if a...

What age do you breed your heifers?

We breed for fall calving for a couple of reasons I guess. First reason is we started breeding that way when we were showing steers. Needed the fall calves for the shows here. The market is usually good in the late spring when we sell calves, so it works for us.

What age do you breed your heifers?

txshowmom, That's a very valid point. You would also have to look at the weight of the weaning calf. The calves from the heavier dams would wean of at a higher weight, then over the life of the cow herd, the initial loss of $10,000 would be greatly reduced. I'm not saying that I think one...

What age do you breed your heifers?

Here's a little background, which I figure would help. My brother and I have a small herd of cows (20 head as of now), so my sample size is not really big enough to make any firm judgements on. We bought all our cows as heifers from our dad. The first year we got five and didn't breed them...

What age do you breed your heifers?

I'm sure it's been discussed before on the board, but I'm new here and haven't seen it. What age do you normally breed your replacement heifers? (I know that some of it varies between breeds) We run Angus cattle and breed for fall calving. We use to hold all the heifers and breed them at...

We all have been lying about our jobs

My personal favorite episode of the year was when about 1/2 mile of twine got wrapped somehow around all the sprockets and all in the chain on the baler. We had to take all the sprockets off left side of the baler and pick all the twine out, a little at a time. We were "broke down" for a...
