    XP-820 ear tags

I used these several years ago and was astounded at how well they worked. Like a dummy I used them the next year and the flies became resistant. And before that they were resistant to everything. Just two weeks ago I put Tri-Zap in the ears of just four cows in a herd of 12 and there are VERY...

Emaciated cow eats hay but eats one cube and stops

I will talk to my vet today since we know what the problem is (exactly what he suspected). Sometimes she eats cubes pretty well and sometimes not, still scarfing down the hay but still very thin.

    Makes sense. Thanks.

Emaciated cow eats hay but eats one cube and stops

Cow is still eating better (maybe 2 to 3 lbs. twice a day--not near as much as she should). She is still eating hay very well, but she has all along. She spit up another bolus of trash on Thursday (see pic). I am going to ask vet Monday what if anything I can give her to encourage more trash...

Emaciated cow eats hay but eats one cube and stops

This is the cow when we brought her home in July, and her today...and the trash she spit up on Wed.

Emaciated cow eats hay but eats one cube and stops

Good news! But first, she never did produce much milk, her calf was about to starve when we "rescued" them, as she was skin and bones. And has been for the last five months. Calf is doing great and outgrowing her pot-bellied look. I did not take to vet Monday, something told me it would do no...

Emaciated cow eats hay but eats one cube and stops

No drooling. Checked her mouth last night and didn't see anything abnormal. BUT I am going to give her one last shot and take her to the vet Mon. AM for a proper mouth/teeth exam. Gave her 10 cc of Banamine last night. This morning I noticed one difference......when she ate her one cube I heard...

Emaciated cow eats hay but eats one cube and stops

Well, if you think about it, when she eats hay she just swallows it down......to be chewed later.... I actually videoed her chewing and swallowing one cube and it took 10 seconds....way too long...Should be getting her into the chute in about 3 hours. No oofing sound, also, and not overly...

Emaciated cow eats hay but eats one cube and stops

Feces are normal. We will put her in the chute this evening and examine her mouth, give Banamine too. If that shows nothing I guess put a magnet in her. When she went to the vet when we first rescued her I don't recall him spending but a second looking at her teeth to age her. But at that point...

Emaciated cow eats hay but eats one cube and stops

Temp. is normal. I will give her Banamine this evening, that thought just occurred to me too, if it is pain in mouth that might temporarily stop it. Will examine mouth too. And I know I probably should have put her down two or three months ago. Have tried several kinds of very tiny pellets and...

Emaciated cow eats hay but eats one cube and stops

That's what I was wondering. Should I take her back to the vet for a thorough mouth exam? Or put her in the chute and try to look first?

Emaciated cow eats hay but eats one cube and stops

Long story, but we took in a severely emaciated cow in July (she became so shortly after calving) and for almost four months she has not gained any weight, in spite of offering her numerous feeds. Vet can find nothing wrong and says she is only 5 or 6. Fecal was clean. All other cows in her herd...

    calf grazes on knees

My friend says it walks normally, but I'll take a good look at it as soon as I can.

    calf grazes on knees

A friend who leases out her pasture is wondering why one on the calves--perhaps six months old--grazes on her knees. She walks normally but is always on her knees when grazing. She hasn't seen her drink. I would guess that she can't lower her head for some reason but I told her I would ask the...

    my cow is lonely

I was under the impression that Holsteins, Jerseys and such needed to be dried up gradually (calves allowed to nurse just once a day for awhile, that sort of thing), or antibiotic placed in the teats, or SOMETHING, to prevent the cow from developing mastitis. That's not correct?

    Impacted Gut

Don't feed him hay, feed him green grass, even if you have to pull it up by hand by the side of the road.

    Coccidia from chickens??

I have never had an animal recover without treatment, the diarrhea will become bloody if the calf is not treated, that's been my experience. I read somewhere once that if it reached the bloody stage that the intestine could have permanent damage. Maybe I have a particularly nasty strain.......

    Fence Line Weaning ?

Is there anybody out there that weans "gradually", or am I just really weird? I "fence-line" wean but for about three days I let the cows in twice a day (after the calves nurse and they lick on them a bit the cows leave the corral readily for a few cubes, they know the routine), then let the...

    Coccidia from chickens??

We have coccidia in our soil--we brought it in with dairy calves about 20 years ago. Every year I have to treat one or two calves with Sustain boluses--the youngest to get it has been about three weeks, the oldest is calves we are weaning, up to eight months (and it can cause a little bloat in...

    New calf, No bag!!!

If she truly has a tiny bag, she might never be able support the calf. Had this happen twice. Bottle-fed baby in addition to what little he got from mom--just took bottle out in pasture and baby would come right to it, after getting him going on it when he was trying to nurse but mama was...
