    Vitaferm Mineral Program

I used Vitaferm 5S 9 months out of the year and Heat in the 3 months of summer for about 3 years. I was disappointed with the results. While using Vitaferm, I had more sickness. I had retained placenta I hadn't had in years. I had pinkeye which I hadn't had in years. My conception rates were...

    Bull hoof wrap

What do you pay for vet wrap? I thought 9.50 for 4 rolls was fair! I can live with whatever they want to decorate it with.

    Bull hoof wrap

I had a cow that I wrapped her foot with this stuff: https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/powerflex-4-in-bandage-15-ft-black-horseshoes-on-lime-green-pack-of-4?cm_vc=-10005 Not sure if that is what is call vet wrap. It is stretches and was easy to work with. Not sticky like tape, but...

    What’s everyone using for minerals.

Why are you trying to avoid salt? We can get free soil tests done by University of Kentucky. Mine shows I am low in Phos.

    Lice or Something Else?

Agree that it is probably ringworm. It should run it's course and clear up without intervention. I have a bred heifer who looks as you describe. I usually see it as a sign of poor immune health in the animal. However, it could just be that a young animal has never been exposed to it yet. It is...

    What’s everyone using for minerals.

I was talking to the mineral salesman from Vita Ferm and told him I would like to try the CA 10. He warned me it had a lot of Phos in it. He said if you feed any grain, you should not use it. My question to him (and you) is what if you don't feed any grain and soil tests show your land is low in...

    What’s everyone using for minerals.

I have been using VitaFerm minerals. Concept Aid 5S from August to April and Heat for May to July. Switched to that about 2 years ago. Last year I was disappointed with several cases of pink eye and generally the cows seemed less healthy. I have some ringworm now. I don't know how much of that...

    Expected extreme heat wave temperatures

Exactly. Same as 95f and 62% rh.

    Expected extreme heat wave temperatures

    This chart shows it. https://www.iweathernet.com/wxnetcms/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/heat-index-chart-relative-humidity-2.png

    Expected extreme heat wave temperatures

121 at 9% Rh is the same "feels like" (115) as 95 at 62% RH - according to the "heat index" chart anyway. Both are considered "dangerous". Swamp coolers or misters are very effective with low humidity. They don't work very well with high humidity.

    Lapping water like a dog

Has she always lapped water? Some cows just drink different than others. Probably not a big deal. It seems I read that lapping water could be a sign of woody tongue, but if it is you should be able to see the tongue is swollen and hard. If lapping water is her only problem, I wouldn't suspect...

    Pink eye and mineral use

The Southern States mineral does not list a feed rate, directly. It says "Feed at a rate to provide not more than 3 mg/head/day of supplemental selenium." I am a little rusty on how to convert from 52 ppm selenium to 3 mg/head/day and end up with a total oz per head per day of mineral. Any help...

    Pink eye and mineral use

Interesting that the pinkeye showed up after I stopped the daily rotations for a few weeks and kicked the cows into a partially wooded area to clean it up. Maybe that was more stress than they could handle? How would one go about answering that question (if mineral(s) are nutritionally limiting...

    Pink eye and mineral use

Everything else is the same, the only variable that has changed since last year (and really in the last 10 years) is the mineral. Coincidence?

    Pink eye and mineral use

I haven't had a case of pinkeye in my little cow herd in over 10 years. When the cows got pinkeye last time I was not feeding any mineral. The year after I had the last outbreak of pinkeye I switched to a mineral sold at Southern States. The formula for that mineral was changed in the last few...

    Over Conditioned

Another concern that hasn't been mentioned with over conditioned cows is how they handle the summer heat. My fattest cows (and steers) are always the ones panting and showing heat stress once it gets hot out. The fat ones will be looking for shade and a water hole. At least that is how it is...

    Help identifying problem

I had the vet out today and figured I would update this. Several new bumps showed up, over the anus. The one on the right has almost doubled in size since the photo. The cow is still eating good and looks fine (except the large growths). The vet confirmed the cow is bred. The tumors are in...

    Help identifying problem

Talked to the vet this evening. I did not have him do a farm visit. I just sent him pictures and talked to him on the phone. He has been out here before and I think he even looked at this cow before. He was nice enough to review pictures and talk about it without coming out. He is thinking it is...

    Help identifying problem

Any idea what a surgery like that costs? I know it will vary. I will probably call the vet next week and see what he thinks. This cow doesn't owe me anything, she has definitely paid for herself. She raised some good calves that sold well. But at the same time she already has several strikes on...
