How soon can you catch and cut bull calves?

 fair enough. We band all of ours not long after they hit the ground. These are starting to cause problems because they are beginning to act like bulls.

How soon can you catch and cut bull calves?

To ask the opposite of this question, what's "too big" to cut? I've got some 500+ pounders that came with a set of mismanaged cows and I haven't really figured out what to do with them yet.

    Salt/Minerals....Question

As far as I remember my main brand doesn't have any salt in it but I don't have a bag in front of me right now. I know in my area I go through 100+ pounds of mineral to 50 pounds of salt. I just bought a set of good black cattle who have had almost zero management. The first thing I did was put...

    very few flies

The pour on is Gordon's brand. A rub is simply a large sponge of sorts that you can either stretch between two gate posts or trees or loafing shed post. You soak this sponge in the fly repellent and it allows the cattle to walk under it and "rub". This gets the liquid on their backs and helps...

    very few flies

We put fly rubs out a few weeks ago and ran all the girls at the house through and poured them. I am 100% sure that it knocked the flies down by 75% or better. Nothing fancy just the stuff that TSC sells in the two gallon jug (it was on sale too) :D

What are your thoughts on application? Is it best to use rubs? Direct application? Both?

    lump on calfs jaw

Had one do the same thing. Got him up in the chute and gave him a shot. Older gentlemen was there who's run cattle for longer than I've been alive and his advice was to just leave it alone. In a few weeks it went away. Like Dexta I had them on some pretty stemy stuff. "Benign Neglect".

    Pink Eye is getting started..........

We've put lights up on the working pens and have been working them at night. Don't want another one getting hot in the chute again. I'm blaming all the moisture (rain) for the surplus flies this year.

    Warts near eye.

One of the calves I'm feeding out has had warts on her since she was weaned. I'd say this was about three weeks ago. I noticed Saturday that she now has several that are right next to her eye. I'm a fan of benign neglect in most cases but just wanted to see if anybody had ever had a cow lose an...

    Loner Cow

That's on my mind every time I feed the little guy. I do my best not to rub on him or handle him too much but I figure there's probably no way around it. Whenever he see's my truck pull up the road to the barn he runs to the fence and stands waiting for me. The bull out in the field now we...

    Loner Cow

 I never thought about that dun... I have recently acquired a high bred Brahman calf whose momma died from a nearby farm. My grand scheme was to get him grown and turn him loose with the girls. This may be a stupid question (I'm sorry if it is) but do you think he'll have the loner...

    Loner Cow

I would agree with that. I always wrote it off that since she was a show heifer that she got used to being alone. If I can see her then most of the time she doesn't bother me that much. It's when she decides to get way back in the trees and I have to hunt her down just to put my mind at ease...

    Loner Cow

Just wanted to see how many of you had run into this before (I wouldn't think it's all that uncommon)? We have this one cow... She's an old show cow that's about three now. She has never really joined the herd. Whenever I ride out to check on them you can guarantee she'll usually be about 200...
